Casper The White Lion In The Kruger National Park Is Aging Well

Concerns have been posted on social media about “Casper”, the white lion which frequents the area around Satara, with suggestions that he may be suffering from anthrax or was possibly bitten by a snake with some members of the public calling for intervention. SANParks confirms that Casper was located and examined resulting in anthrax and a snake bite being ruled out. “Casper” is in good condition. There are injuries above his right eye and in his mouth which suggest that he was likely bitten by another lion. These injuries are also the cause of the infection and swelling of his face.

Casper is considered an elder (at the age of 11 going on 12) and is one of two remaining males from a strong coalition of four brothers of which two have already died. This coalition has been taken over by two younger stronger males in the Satara area. The white pigment is a result of a recessive gene – resulting in the pigmentation loss of the skin and fur, making it a unique and sought after sighting in Kruger National Park.
