Field Ranger (Re – Advertisement)
A vacancy currently exists for a Field Ranger in Agulhas National Park. The successful candidate will report to the Section Ranger. The successful candidate will support and assist line management in protecting the integrity of the area in line with relevant legislation and internal policies. The successful candidate will reside Inside the Park.

Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric) / NQF level 4.
- Nature Conservation qualification will be an added advantage.
- EMI Grade 5 designation desirable.
- Firearms competency will be an added advantage.
- 1 – 2 years’ experience in a Nature Conservation field.
- Practical experience or knowledge in alien clearing, erosion control, monitoring, law enforcement and fire management.
- Working knowledge of relevant conservation legislation.
- Experience in operating a tractor will be an added advantage.
- Valid code 8/10 driver’s license.
- Clear Criminal Record (candidates will be screened).
- High level of physical fitness (candidates may be expected to undergo a fitness test).
- Availability to work flexible hours e.g., weekends, public holidays, standby duties as and when required.
Responsibilities
Biodiversity Conservation:
- Identify, recognise, and accurately record ecosystems, habitats, and plant/animal species, including signs of wildlife and detailed habitat observations.
- Assist with wildlife management activities, including the control, capture, safe handling, and
- transportation of animals.
Wildlife Protection:
- Protect, enhance, and manage natural, wildlife, recreational, and cultural environmental assets,
- including identifying and supporting the conservation of threatened animal populations.
- Conduct field operations for conservation and protection, including patrols, surveillance, camping, and executing effective anti-poaching activities.
Administration, Information and Research:
- Collect and manage information to support management plans, using electronic devices and
- participating in research activities.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare clear reports on work activities and findings.
Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure safety, law enforcement, and regulatory compliance within protected areas among staff,
- visitors, and stakeholders.
- Respond to emergencies, threats, resolve conflict and support security operations.
- Support visitor management by informing them of regulations.
- Ensure safety, ethical, and environmental compliance in all field and workplace activities.
- Use, maintain, and handle tools and firearms safely and legally in line with regulations.
- Comply with laws, procedures, briefings, and standard operating procedures always.
- Identify, prevent, and report illegal activities, security threats, and dishonest practices.
- Support and participate in law enforcement and anti‑crime operations, including patrols and supervised apprehensions.
- Gather intelligence, document activities, provide and protect formal evidence, and operate effectively in hazardous environments.

- Operate and maintain field tools and equipment, including surveying and communication equipment.
- Prevent, detect, and control fires, ensuring safety and environmental protection.
- Establish and manage field operations, including basic construction tasks and setting up camps.

The remuneration package includes a basic salary aligned with a Paterson B3 job grade, along with applicable allowances, and benefits as specified in the SANParks Conditions of Service.
