Biodiversity Economy Programme

SANParks recognises the need to change the historic perspective of national parks as islands of privilege only for the elite. Our national parks have been, by virtue of their existence and geographic location, a catalyst of rural and local economic development through the creation of jobs and local entrepreneurship.

Our Wildlife Economy Programme implements DFFE’s Wildlife Economy Lab Outcomes of 2016. Its objective is to contribute to the transformation of the biodiversity economy industry by facilitating and enabling ownership of wildlife by historically disadvantaged individuals and communities, including development and restoration of the degraded environment and infrastructure improvement, enhancing their growth, equitable sharing of benefits, and broadening and meaningful participation of youth and women in the mainstream biodiversity economy.
