SANParks’ latest annual research report released

SANParks’ annual research report was published on the SANParks website on Friday 8th December 2023. The visually appealing research report is for the period April 2022 to March 2023. It is a compilation of stories written by scientists, technicians, interns and veterinarians from the Scientific Services, Cultural Heritage and Veterinary Wildlife Services divisions of the Conservation Services Department of South African National Parks. The research and monitoring work that is reported on highlights some of the challenges faced in conservation and solutions to these challenges. Some recommendations are also provided to inform conservation decisions.

The interesting stories included in the 80-page report include how SANParks is tackling climate change and managing invasive species in parks as well as the important work being conducted in marine protected areas, where there is conflict among stakeholder interests. Exciting work is also highlighted on the expansion of Tankwa Karoo National Park and creation of a corridor to the Cederberg Wilderness Area. Additionally, the report captures the dedication of SANParks staff on the ground. These stories include a leopard rescue, pangolin reintroduction and counting animals under difficult circumstances.
