SANParks Research Report 2020/2021

The annual research report is reflective of the diversity of the estate that SANParks manages (terrestrial, freshwater, marine), the diversity of biomes contained in those parks, as well as the social, economic and the ecological interconnections.

During the 2020-21 financial year, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the pandemic-induced regulations had a significant effects across the globe, including on protected areas. However, this historic shut-down of human movement provided a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of how humans and wildlife interact. While the National Lockdown in South Africa had a negative impact on our tourism operations, our conservation operations were allowed to continue as part of essential services.
