Savanna Science Network Meeting gaining student support from top international ecological journal

Shortly before the national lockdown was implemented in South Africa, SANParks Scientific Services hosted the 18th annual International Savanna Science Networking Meeting (1 – 5 March 2020).

Close to 200 delegates representing 88 different scientific and conservation organizations, and representing all continents with savannas, registered for the meeting. Many old-timers were greeted back (some having missed less than two meetings over the 18 years), and many new faces and organizations were welcomed for the first time. The programme included close to 100 presentations, as well as 19 poster presentations, with a good representation of SANParks scientists presenting on their research in the national parks.

The meeting has always encouraged students and young scientists to share the platform with eminent savanna scientists and leaders in the field. As such, we were particularly grateful towards Ecology Letters, one of the top ecological journals (rated 6th out of 168 ecological journals) who kindly sponsored registration fees for three student category winners for next year’s meeting. Over and above feeling gratitude, we are also proud of this sponsorship as it illustrates that this meeting has truly become internationally recognized as one of the top savanna meetings in the world.

You can read the story on the Ecology Letters website.
