Kruger NP Basalt-Granite

The map shows the two main types of geology found within the Kruger National Park (KNP) – basalt and granite – and is mainly used for research purposes. Basalt is a fine grained, dark coloured volcanic igneous rock while granite is a coarse grained, light coloured plutonic igneous rock. The distinct characteristics between these two types of geology play a significant role in the manner in which the vegetation is distributed in the KNP. The basalt has a high nutrient content resulting in higher grass production with fewer trees and has higher fire intensities. Because of its porous nature, the granite has more water infiltration, deeper soils and thus denser woody cover and less herbaceous cover.

Landsystems are areas or regions with recurring patterns, generally seen in terms of landform, underlying geology and vegetation. This dataset has been categorised into eleven landsystems using dominant woody vegetation. It is mainly used for management planning and ecological studies in the Kruger National Park (KNP).
The land systems of the KNP shown in this map use the F.J. Venter dataset of 1990, from his dissertation: A classification of land for management planning in the Kruger National Park.
