4x4 Trails

A 4x4 trail offers visitors a chance at an adventurous, sight-seeing journey available in numerous of our national parks.

Get off the beaten track and traverse territories previously unknown. It's more than just seeing animals; it is an unique opportunity to access parts of the parks that are rarely explored.

Parks that offer 4x4 trails:

Addo Elephant National Park

The Bedrogfontein 4x4 trail between the Kabouga and Darlington areas of the park provides breathtaking views and is rich in history. This route was the scene of fierce battles between the British and Afrikaner troops during the Anglo-Boer war. Rock art paintings are found scattered throughout the area. The route travels through a variety of vegetation types, from riverine thicket, to afromontane forest, to fynbos on the peaks and into the arid nama-karoo of the Darlington area.

Camdeboo National Park

Koedoeskloof 4x4 trail (grade 3 to 4)
This trail provides a drive to the top of the mountain, providing unique and spectacular views of the landscape. The trail can be completed with a return journey following the same track in about three hours but the Karoo tranquility and scenic vistas beg for a full day outing.

Driekoppe 4x4 Trail
This is a scenic grade 2 trail. You can follow the track past the water supply pump, to the top of Hanglip with its panoramic view of the Camdeboo plains or follow the stream bed down Wolfkloof to the waterfall. You can also treck a circular route by following the left hand turn off. Both 2x4's and 4x4's can make use of the trail.

They are designed as unique adventure experiences to add value to your stay in the Kruger National Park. A 4x4 vehicle is essential to minimize environmental damage. Some of the trails have dongas or river beds to be negotiated while all can be treacherous in the wet season.

Namaqua National Park

The route allows you to experience a wide range of Namaqua habitats, from mountains to coast. The route starts at Skilpad, where the Parks' offices are situated. The road then descents down the Soebatsfontein pass, before turning north to the Wildeperdehoek grass plains. An interesting detour is possible to include the Wildeperdehoek pass. From here the road goes through the Namaqua flatlands. This area is renowned for its 'Riethuis quartz' and the dune areas, which has a dry fynbos type growing here. Crossing the main Hondeklip bay road you will enter the Namakwa Coastal section of the park, which consists of 50km spectacular coastline, before ending at Groen river mouth.
