Media Release: Fire season has started in Marakele National Park
30 May 2013
The fire season started on 1 May and will last until the end of October; this is according to MNP Park Manager, Johan Taljaard, who said the fire management will be administered on all parts of the park.
In 2012 the Park experienced veld fires in the eastern section of the Park. Although this did not damage much, it had the potential to damage the fauna and flora we are preserving and also the infrastructure within the Park. We do not want to experience a similar experience and therefore advise everyone to work with us towards avoiding it.
As this season continues, visitors to the park are encouraged to be cautious and help in combating these veld fires. The public can get involved by alerting officials if they notice any fire occurrences in or around the Park so that together we help protect the Park.
“We appeal to all the people who will be visiting Marakele during this period to make fire in designated picnic or braai places, and if not, permission should be granted by the Conservation Manager”, advised Taljaard.
As always, our rangers will be on guard for any urgent matters and we request you to contact us at (014) 777-6930.
