Media Release: Parks in SANParks' Northern Region get ready for Mandela Day 2013

17 July 2013

“South African National Parks goes all out in celebrating this day because it helps us in living out our vision statement of ‘Connecting to Society’. Our parks in the region will ensure that we extend a helping hand to all those that are less fortunate than us.” said Property Mokoena, Northern Region Manager.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the jewel of the Free State, will also take time to refurbish Mojalefa primary school which is situated approximately 7 km from the Park. The school hosts a total of 120 learners from surrounding farms and the nearby Clarens community. The main activity here will be the revamping of the main hall and two classrooms. Golden Gate staff members will play a key role, but plan to make it more exciting by engaging the learners.

On Saturday 20 July 2013, Mapungubwe National Park, which is situated 70 kilometres east of the town of Musina in the province of Limpopo, will partner with Venetia Mine to visit Ikageng Drop in Centre in the Blouberg Municipality where they will establish a vegetable garden, paint the building, donate toys and learning materials whilst spending quality time with the 283 vulnerable and orphaned children who are housed at the centre.

“We are really excited about this day and hope it will have an intended impact on all that we shall be assisting. This year’s Mandela day is extra special because the man of the day is in hospital, and we hope all the good work that we and other people will be engaged in will contribute to his recovery.” Mokoena concluded.

This year’s theme is “Take Action; Inspire Change; Make Every Day a Mandela Day”.
