Ntomeni Spruit Dam

Ntomeni Spruit dam is one of the many man-made structures associated with the beginning of the Kruger National Park. The dam exhibits 19th century dam style and design. Ntomeni Spruit dam is the work of Maurice Rowland Jones who was appointed as a Ranger in Kruger National Park in 1931 by James Stevenson-Hamilton. His main duty was to initially supervise gate officials at Numbi gate near Pretoriuskop. Rowland Jones had some experience with building and working with concrete, and Stevenson Hamilton asked him to build a dam on the Ntomeni Spruit between Pretoriuskop and the Nellmapius Drift near the old Delagoa Road. The dam was designed, constructed, and completed in 1932, but unfortunately did not anchor the foundation properly and the first flood tore a hole under the dam wall. The Break was repaired but the dam never held water well after that. It later silted up, storing enough water during the rainy season to maintain an almost permanent supply of water below the wall.
