African Spirituality Weekend - Meet the traditional healers

<p>Golden Gate Highlands National Park will be hosting an African Spirituality Weekend from 16 - 18 September 2016.&nbsp;A celebration of South Africa&rsquo;s living heritage and indigenous knowledge systems; the event which is a partnership between SANParks, WILD and the Sesiyakhula Njalo organisation involves an exploration of ancient African traditions and spiritual beliefs.</p>

<p>SANParks is most renowned for the protection of the biodiversity of flora and fauna in its 22 parks; lesser known is that it also has as its primary mandate, the protection and promotion of South Africa&rsquo;s cultural heritage. Several of the parks under SANParks&rsquo; management have significant spiritual, cultural and historical status with several boasting archaeological and heritage sites.</p>

South African National Parks (SANParks) is on a mission to ensure that its Rangers are Environmental Management Inspectorate (EMI) compliant - this was confirmed at a Certificate Award ceremony for over 50 Rangers that are responsible for the Northern Region Parks (Golden Gate, Marakele and Mapungubwe).

Conservation wins at The Old Mutual Wild Series - Golden Gate Challenge

The Golden Gate Challenge (a three day trail run) brought to you by the Old Mutual Wild Series took place from October 22 to 25. The race had over 180 participants, showing the popularity and success of the unique Old Mutual Wild Series events. The stage distances of 27km, 29km and 17km traversed through restricted parts of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, rarely seen by the public. The Golden Gate Highlands National Park is home to one of Southern Africa's few remaining populations of the Bearded Vulture, a critically endangered bird found in high altitude landscapes.

The SANParks’ Northern Region (Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site and Golden Gate Highlands National Park) has heeded the call to action and will be joinining the world at large in celebrating 67 minutes of Mandela day. Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected president gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity, and on this day (his birthday) every global citizen is asked to selflessly donate 67 minutes of their time to those less fortunate.
