Media Release: Re-opening of Tsitsikamma Big Tree in GRNP
05 January 2010
The public and tourists to the Garden Route can look forward to an exciting period of being able to gain access to the Tsitsikamma Big Tree after its closure for a period of 36 months due to major roadworks undertaken by the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) on the N2.
During this period of reconstruction to the N2, SANRAL, in its agreement with the Garden Route National Park (GRNP), has undertaken to build a new public parking area with 74 parking spaces. This will ensure a safer and a better parking facility to all visitors to the Tsitsikamma Big Tree.
In addition to this, visitors to the Big Tree will enjoy a relaxed atmosphere at the look out deck providing stunning views of the gap in the forest and access to well maintained trails.
Commenting on this milestone, Dr Nomvuselelo Songelwa, GRNP Park Manager, said, “We are happy that this re-opening coincided with the festive season. SANRAL’s improvement of the road infrastructure has also enhanced one of the icons of the secrets of the forests that we manage in the Garden Route. This provides us an opportunity to plan an even better tourist product in the area in the near future. To all tourists and locals, you have not seen the Garden Route without marvelling at one of the nature’s big secrets in Tsitsikamma”.
The Big Tree was opened at 8:00 on Monday, 14 December 2009. The entrance fees for adults will be R8 and children will pay R4.
For further information, the public can contact the GRNP offices on the following number: (042) 811 557 during office hours.
