Ride the Eastern Cape’s Toughest Mountain Bike Challenge

07 October 2010

This awesome race, billed as the Eastern Cape’s “Toughest Mountain Bike Challenge”, offers mountain bikers a chance to race through some of the most magnificent countryside inside the Addo Elephant National Park, and includes climbing the historic Zuurberg Pass, hand-built by slave labourers in the 1860’s.

With a total of over R60 000 in prize monies up for grabs and a first prize of R15 000 in the 85km race, this event promises a lot of action for the country’s top mountain bikers.  The awesome scenery and adventurous routes will offer all the other riders the ideal mountain biking adventure as well as a challenging mountain bike race for the more competitive riders.

This year’s event has 3 brand new race routes and 2 Kiddies Challenges options:

Firstly, there is the 30km Capespan Family Fun Ride following an undemanding route over gravel roads and jeep tracks, ideal for the social rider and their family members.   Then there’s the challenging  60km The Herald Challenge, taking in some awesome trails with a reasonable to high  level of technical difficulty for the avid mountain bike enthusiast, recreational MTB riders and sporting celebrities who enjoy a challenge.

Finally, there is the 85km Mondi Extreme Challenge route with a high level of technical difficulty to attract the country’s professional and top amateur MTB riders to the event. This route includes gravel roads, jeep tracks and awesome single track. There is also some extremely steep single track climbs and down-hills with switch-backs. “Be warned, this ain’t for sissies”.  Don’t miss out on this opportunity to race against some of South Africa’s top Cycling Pro’s and Sporting Celebrities as they take up the challenge!

As the event organisers, Leisure Cycle Tours & Adventures considered involving the whole family to be a key theme for this event. For this reason we have included 2 Kiddies Fun Challenges for the little ones under the age of 10 years.  With a Toddlers Dash around the Polo Field and a 5km Kiddies Challenge, there’s something for everyone at this year’s event. Then there will be a family festival at the Race Village Start / Finish venue with plenty of entertainment, food & drink stands, a beer tent, and a supervised Kiddies Play Park with children’s games and family activities.

Race Registration opens on Saturday afternoon, 30th October 2010 at 12:00 and runs through to until 20:00.  Saturday afternoon will also feature some great activities starting at 14H00 with a 2-Man Time Trial Race over a 10km circuit.  A the same time there will be a supervised Kiddies Play Park with jumping castles and other games to keep the young ones entertained while the adults and bigger children can enjoy a guided “Game Ride” through the Intsomi Game Reserve – a once in a lifetime opportunity to do game viewing from your bicycle!

Then there is the Currie Cup Rugby Final on the Big Screen at the Race Village Clubhouse at 17:00, followed by supper at the Clubhouse.  There will also be an overnight campground at the Race Village with ablution facilities, a pub, campfires, meals and music.  So be sure to bring the whole family along and join us for an awesome weekend cycling adventure.
