Media Release: Rape incident did not happen in Addo Elephant National Park

South African National Parks (SANParks) wishes to clarify that a rape incident which took place on Saturday 24 July, did not happen in the Addo Elephant National Park.

The rape incident in fact took place at a bed and breakfast establishment near the town of Addo.

“Following reports in the media, we received many calls and emails from concerned visitors who thought that the incident happened in the national park,” said Regional Communications Manager, Megan Taplin.

“While we found this incident shocking and disturbing, we would like to clear up the confusion and reassure our visitors that visitor safety is of the utmost importance to us,” continued Taplin.

Taplin added that there are a number of security measures in place at Addo Elephant National Park including an electrified fence which totally surrounds the Park as well as 24-hour security personnel and security (CCTV) cameras at the entrance gates.
