Addo Elephant National Park: New Entry and Exit Arrangements
It’s been just over nine months since the new, stricter entry and exit measures were put in place at our gates in an effort to improve the safety and security of our visitors, staff, fauna and flora. This has entailed the scanning of every entering vehicle’s licence disc, as well as the driver’s license of the driver. We thank all our visitors who have understood the requirement over this time and complied.
These measures will be stepped up soon, to include the verification of all passengers over the age of 18. As of 1 April 2023, no one will be allowed to enter OR exit the Park without the VALID documentation as listed below, which must be made available for the gate staff on duty to scan.
- Driver’s license (driver of the vehicle)
- ID book/card/driver’s license for South African visitors (all persons/passengers over 18)
- Passport (for international guests)
- Valid vehicle license disk
NO DOCUMENT means NO ENTRY!
Please note that this applies to EVERYONE entering/exiting the Park:
- All passengers in vehicles
- Staff
- Staff visitors (including pedestrians)
- Official visitors
- Contractors and their staff, including BSP
- Delivery vehicles and their staff
- Wild Card holders
- Gorah and Riverbend concessions
- Open safari vehicles
- Tourist busses
Addo Elephant National Park: Woody Cape Information
To contact this section of the Park, please call 071 563 2115 – Cellphone reception is sketchy at times, so please bear with them. Alternately, please call Matyholweni Rest Camp on 041 468 0916 or the Addo Duty Cellphone 082 471 0267.
Office hours: The Reception office closes at 15:00 daily. Day hikers will no longer be accommodated after that time. Guests arriving after 15:00 will find their keys in the key boxes. They will need to report to the office the next day to complete all the necessary paperwork.
Groups planning to take on the Alexandria Trail are reminded that a minimum of three people and a maximum of 12 are allowed at a time. Starting time for the trail is no later than 10:00.
After recent and persistent heavy rain, it is advisable that only high-ground clearance vehicles drive the Woody Cape access road from the R72 during or immediately after rainy days. Regular vehicles may take it on, albeit at a slow, careful pace, looking out for potholes, on non-rainy days. Please note that this is a District road, and as such falls out of SANParks’ jurisdiction.
Additionally, access to Umsintsi Cottage on the two-track road is only possible with a high-ground clearance vehicle.
Table Mountain National Park: Tokai Sales Office
Currently, only the Tokai Sales Office is open for sales of Green Cards and Activity Permits.
Note that the Sales office is a cash-free environment and we only accept payments via debit and credit cards.
We are not able to assist clients during loadshedding. Please review the loadshedding schedule for the City of Cape Town prior to arrival – the office is in Zone 8.
Addo Elephant National Park: Closure of Darlington Dam Fisherman’s Camp
SANParks Management took a decision at the beginning of 2023 to close the Darlington Dam Fisherman’s Camp for fishing and/or camping activities. This was in line with the minimum standard requirement for tourism (of there being functional ablutions on site) which could not be maintained after the toilets that were provided were continuously vandalised over time. Illegal firewood collection and littering was also a major problem that contributed to the decision.
Groups of 10 people or more wanting to host fishing competitions/league events in the interim are advised that they will only be able to do so once they have successfully applied and paid for an event permit through the official channels and if they provide proof that they will supply their own environmentally friendly portable toilets (specifications will be provided by SANParks) for the duration of their event. To request an application form, please e-mail [email protected]
Groups of 10 people or more who wish to camp at the dam may contact the Conservation Manager – Anban Padayachee via email at least a week in advance – [email protected]
If they provide proof that they will supply their own environmentally friendly portable toilets (specifications will be provided by SANParks) for the duration of their stay, they will then be forwarded the necessary rules and regulations.
A permit will only be issued once proof of payment has been received upon which a permit will then be issued. No entry without a permit.
The group leader will be held liable for any damage or breach of Park rules and regulations.
The matter will be given attention in the meantime to find a more suitable, lasting solution. Until then, Management apologises for the inconvenience.
Addo Elephant National Park: Travelling to the Park
Guests travelling from Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) to the Park are advised to avoid the R335 via Motherwell route due to safety concerns. Instead, please make use of the N2 via Colchester and either enter at Camp Matyholweni near Colchester, or via Paterson to Main Camp.
Agulhas National Park: Cape Agulhas Lighthouse Precinct Development
South African National Parks (SANParks) committed to the upgrade and renewal of the existing Cape Agulhas Lighthouse precinct within Agulhas National Park, in order to provide an improved tourism offering and facilities.
What is Planned?
The development will include a tourism reception area for Agulhas National Park, a restaurant, a retail facility, an interpretation and exhibition area, a multi-use auditorium, vendor stalls, toilet facilities and an outdoor multi-use open area for events, as well as a parking area.

Impacts during Construction
- Every effort will be made to minimise impacts on our visitors as we complete these works.
- During the course of construction, it might be necessary to close the lighthouse temporarily to the public.
- There will be no ablution facilities available during the entire construction period.
- There will be a loss of parking spaces at the back of the lighthouse, however, there are limited parking spaces off the paved road at the front of the lighthouse on the seaside. Visitors are also welcome to park at the southernmost parking area and walk along the boardwalk to the lighthouse.
Kruger National Park: Guests advised to use Phabeni Gate instead of Numbi Gate

West Coast National Park: Wild Cards Sales
Wild cards at West Coast National Park can only be purchased at the visitor centre at Geelbek or at the Langebaan office. Currently, such cards cannot be purchased at either of the two gates (Langebaan or R27 gate). No refunds are available to visitors who enter the park at either of these two gates and pay conservation fees and then purchase a wild card thereafter. Visitors are thus encouraged to renew or purchase their wild cards (where applicable) online or at the Langebaan office before entering the park.
Table Mountain National Park: Drones
We do not allow recreational drones to overfly Table Mountain National Park at any location.
Table Mountain National Park: Differential Tariffs at Cape Point and Boulders as of 1 November 2018
SANParks announced on 1 November 2017 that Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) would be charging differential tariffs as of 1 November 2018 at all its entry gates. The year’s notice was afforded to allow the public and commercial business the opportunity to prepare for the rates change.
This announcement was put out via a press release and on the SATSA website and has been followed up with numerous articles in a range of magazines and newspapers as well as radio interviews.
All the other 19 National parks have been charging differential tariffs since 2005 and Table Mountain National Park has now moved to follow suit.
As of 1 November, the park will have three rates for entry at the gates.
The Standard rate is what Foreign Visitors will pay.
The SADC rate afforded to those visitors who can prove they are SADC Nationals by producing their original passport on arrival at the gate
And the Local rate which South African Residents will be charged if they can prove they are SA residents at the gate on entry
The required proof for the local rate is one of the following documents:
SA ID Book, SA ID Card, SA Drivers Licence, SA Passport, proof of Permanent Residency or valid visa (work, spousal, volunteer, retirement, study)
We require all visitors to produce original valid proof of Residency or Nationality. We do not accept photocopies or scanned copies. This is a requirement for entry across all 21 national parks and is not unique to Table Mountain National Park.
Should you have any queries around the new rates please contact:

Table Mountain National Park: Buses at Cape Point
Large buses need to exercise caution when using the bus lane at Cape Point Main Gate as we are in the process of adding an additional lane to the gate. Although there are barrier fences up and warning and directional signage in place, the lane is narrower than usual due to the upgrade. In addition there are workers and delivery vehicles on site so we ask that drivers be extra cautious when approaching the facility.
