Media Release: Last chance to register for Marakele Marathon online

Runners who still want to participate in the 2018 Marakele Marathon have until Wednesday, 28 February to register online. Marakele Marathon which is a qualifier to the Comrades is set to take place on 3 March 2018 at Marakele National Park outside Thabazimbi.

“We encourage runners to register on time to avoid last minute rush. This is an opportunity not to be missed, as runners get a chance to qualify in a national park where the Big 5 roam freely. With the target set at 1 000 participants, for all the races, the time to enter is now, we will have manual registration on Friday 2nd March but encourage people to enter now as there is a cut-off per race category” said Mphadeni Nthangeni, Park Manager at Marakele.

This marathon organised by SANParks in partnership with SANParks Honorary Rangers and Thabazimbi Marathon Club is not only a qualifier race but also a family outing for nature lovers. Proceeds from this race are used to support conservation projects in the park. “We appeal to all runners and visitors of the park to obey rules and regulations of the park as stipulated on their entry permits,” concluded Nthangeni.

For the first time this year all participants who complete the race will receive a medal resembling one of the Big 5. This trend will continue for the next five years with each year focussing on a specific member of the Big 5.

Runners can register for any of the following categories 42km; 21km; 10km and 5km fun run (which is suitable for the whole family). Those who wish to participate can register online at www.quicket.co.za and manual entries as well as accommodation in the park please contact Elise Coetzer on [email protected] or fax 086 613 0720.
