MZNP Restaurant celebrates the Karoo Food Festival this weekend

As part of the Karoo Food Festival taking place in Cradock this weekend, the Mountain Zebra National Park Restaurant is offering a Venison Spitbraai on Saturday night.

Media Release: Desert Knights MTB Challenge 2016

The first bi-annual Desert Knights MTB Adventure took place during 18 - 23 April 2016. This six day multi-stage mountain-biking event started at Hobas Camp site (Fish River Canyon) in Namibia and ended in  |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. Cycling took place during the late afternoon into the late evening, at night over the full-moon period, and the event included a portion of canoeing in the Orange River.  The total distance covered were 275 km cycling and 34.5 km of canoeing down the Orange River. This year, 78 enthusiasts from all corners of South Africa took part in the event.

The release of an addition to Camdeboo National Park’s insect family towards the end of 2015 is starting to show results.  The project is being jointly run by Rhodes University in Grahamstown, the Park and its Biodiversity Social Projects.  The purpose is to aid in the fight against an alien invasive species which is threatening the biodiversity of the Park.

South African National Parks (SANParks) today (Sunday 24 April 2016) announced the passing away of three day visitors to the Kruger National Park (KNP) after the taxi they were travelling in overturned between Shingwedzi and Mopani in the Northern Section of the KNP.  Preliminary reports suggest that there was no other car involved, however the SAPS are investigating the incident and circumstances around it.    

Fuel reduction burns to take place in Table Mountain National Park

21 April 2016:  The Fire Management Department will be conducting controlled burns in various sections of the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) in the coming weeks. The TMNP is in the process of conducting a series of fuel reduction burns in the northern, central and southern sections of the park as done annually.

Portion of S3 gravel road to temporarily close for maintenance in KNP

Mapungubwe National Park, situated 70 km outside the town of Musina offers visitors an unforgettable life experience. The Park which is situated in the Shashe and Limpopo rivers is the first African Kingdom in Southern Africa. The rich, extra-ordinary history that is found in this area led to its declaration as world heritage site in 2004. The Confluence, where two rivers (Shashe and Limpopo) and three countries (South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe) collide can be perfectly viewed when one is in Mapungubwe.

In what is potentially a major boost for sustainable development in South Africa, the CEOs of South African National Parks (SANParks) and the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Green Fund, have announced the findings of a two-year pilot that has demonstrated conservation as a growing and value-adding sector within rural development at the Development Bank of South Africa in Midrand on Tuesday, 4 April 2016.  SANParks CEO Fundisile said, “whilst traditionally conservation is regarded by many as a ‘trade-off’ with development, the pilots have shown that conservation can actually competitively lead and stimulate development.”
