Golden Gate Highlands National Park has today received another round of heavy snow following the snow that fell last month. According to Victor Mokoena, Acting Park Manager of GGHNP this snow is much heavier than the previous one.

After losing all their belongings in an accidental fire, the Jaars family was left destitute and disheartened.  On 4 April 2016 their 14-year old daughter and her friends were playing with matches whilst sitting on their bed.  “Within seconds the duvet caught alight followed by moments of flashes and then it was all gone” recalls Mr Pieter Jaars (34) stepfather to Me-shanty Don (14).

Injured flamingos on Swartvlei in Garden Route National Park

SANParks rangers are currently monitoring Swartvlei for evidence of more injured flamingos subsequent to a horrific accident this morning. The birds were badly injured when they flew into a nearby power line parallel to the N2. Thus far; two dead flamingos were collected; one badly injured had to be euthanized yesterday, 18 July 2016. Four seriously injured flamingos  were collected this morning and rushed to Tenikwa Wildlife’s Rehabilitation Centre for treatment.

Trans-Augrabies Mountain Bike Stage Race - Augrabies Falls National Park

The inaugural Trans-Augrabies MTB race took place from 17 to 19 June 2016 starting at low temperatures. Strong wind and lots of sand is any cyclist's nightmare, but this time around it was not a big factor as each one of the 30 odd cyclists that took part enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Some cyclists travelled as far as Bloemfontein, Kimberley and the Cape province, although the majority were local cycling enthusiasts.

Navigating South Africa’s largest individual forests

The Knysna forests managed by the South African National Parks as part of its Garden Route National Park (GRNP) make up around 42,000 hectares of land across the coastal stretch from George to Tsitsikamma in the East. The forests which were formerly managed by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry include Farleigh, Diepwalle and Tsitsikamma are now managed under the GRNP for conservation. The forests were exploited prior to 1939 when the Government decided to close them to the woodcutters’ system. Between 1940 and 1964 the Government focused largely on plantations.

Erco (15) from Centurion, Pretoria, was camping with his parents, Erno and Cashandra and his two sisters, Zilia and Kyla in the Crocodile Bridge Camp in the Kruger National Park. Whilst sleeping in their tent, a Hyena attacked him at about 04:30 on Sunday 26 June 2016.
