Blue Flag status for beaches in the Garden Route National Park

WESSA’s announcement of beaches awarded Blue Flag status include those in the Garden Route National Park (GRNP). The 2016/2017 list includes the Wilderness beach and Nature's Valley beach. Leaded and unleaded petrol unavailable at Shingwedzi

Guests travelling to the Kruger National Park are notified that leaded and unleaded petrol is unavailable at Shingwedzi Rest Camp until further notice. This is due to petrol tanks undergoing a cleaning process and are therefore out of operation; however the diesel pumps are not affected and are working as normal.

Ecological burn to restore critically endangered Knysna Sand Fynbos on private land

A team of stakeholders has set the date for the week of the 11th of October 2016 for an ecological burn of Portions 39 and 40 of the Uitzigt Farm. "It is a collective effort because 85% of the fynbos scheduled to burn has not burnt in the last 30 years" according to Environmental Planner for the Garden Route National Park, Maretha Alant. Partners include Southern Cape Fire Protection Association (FPA), SANParks, Knysna Municipal Fire Services, Eden District Fire Services - Deputy CFO, PG Bison, CapeNature, Knysna Municipality - Traffic Control and the landowners.

The number of people who visited the five South African National Parks (SANParks) in the Frontier Region (Addo Elephant, Camdeboo, Garden Route, Karoo and Mountain Zebra National Parks) saw good growth compared to the same period last year.  The eleventh annual South African National Parks Week was celebrated from 12 – 16 September, with some parks extending free entry to the weekends, and afforded all South African citizens the opportunity to visit national parks at no cost on day visits.

Marine rangers from Addo Elephant National Park (AENP), the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) released 72 rehabilitated African penguins back into their colony at St Croix Island following a recent oil spill in Algoa Bay (off the coast of Port Elizabeth) today.

Media Release: Military truck overturns at Crocodile River low level bridge in the Kruger National Park

A South African Military Truck with four army staff members based in the Park overturned and fell off the Crocodile River low level bridge in the Kruger National Park (KNP) at about 06:30 yesterday, 26 September 2016. There was diesel spillage into the river and a company to attend to the spill was appointed immediately in order to avoid possible pollution to water and the environment in general.

26 September 2016 - The Minister of Environmental Affairs Dr Edna Molewa, has congratulated the Department’s Environmental Management Inspectorate (Green Scorpions), stationed at O.R Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) working together with Customs, the security company employed by the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) as well as the Directorate For Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) for the arrest of a suspected rhino horn smuggler on the 24th of September 2016.

South African National Parks (SANParks) saw 62 312 visitors to the parks during South African National Parks Week from 12 September to 18 September. This campaign under the established theme "Know Your National Parks" allowed locals with valid identity documents an opportunity to spend a day at a national park of their choice free of charge.

This year the Arid Cultural Event, was nothing sort of pure cultural grandeur. The Arid region, which includes Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Augrabies Falls National Park, Namaqua National Park, |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park and Mokala National Park has for the last seven years held this flagship regional event in partnership with the Dept. of Economic Development and Tourism of the Northern Cape Province (DEDAT). The department has proven to be a worthy partner over and over again.
