Hi :)
Saw this big Ellie last week and was wondering if he is named or emerging.
Not the greatest quality as we were stuck in a cheetah sighting so had to zoom a bit.
Thanks!

- Ndlovane information and tusk data.

Sadly the carcass of Ndlovane was found on the 15th October 2020 by the Mooiplaas field rangers, in the Mahlangene section where it boarders onto the Mooiplaas section, Joe Nkuna (Ranger Mooiplaas) reported the death immediately as the bull was being monitored due to his poor condition and localised range towards the end of last year. The carcass was inspected and the cause of death confirmed as natural.

It would appear after heavy rain that week Ndlovane attempted to walk down a steep embankment into the Tsendze in the direction of his regular haunt of the confluence when he slipped and was unable to stand again. It is suspected his heart gave in not long after he fell as there was limited struggling visible indicting he did not try to get up for long.

The question of age is difficult. A visit to the carcass confirmed when looking on the mouth what was suspected in 2015/6 when he lost condition very rapidly that he had a dental issue. If you look at the lower jaw he had a growth of dentine at the back of his left tooth that prevented him from chewing effectively. Whether this was the 6th set that never developed properly to push the 5th tooth forward or a growth behind his 6th tooth we are not sure, either way it caused his early demise even though is still had significant height on his lamellae, a death that would have resemble any older bulls.

Age estimation factoring in the uneven tooth wear has him in the region of 46 to 48 years of age.
