I'm shattered by this unexpected loss of a birding soul mate.

Pafuri picnic spot will be Frank Mabasa's monument, a tribute to a man for whom life and work were intrinsically linked.

Sad news.

I was hoping to meet up with Frank again on May 30, when next we visit Pafuri.

Now we will visit, reflect and remember.

This is truly very sad news about one of Kruger's iconic people.
My daughter and SO also was shocked to hear about this and our condolences to his family and friends.

Question:
Will it be appropriate to load photos of us who posed with him? or will this be a sensitive matter. He was just such a legend and is will still be in our hearts.

My condolences to Frank's family for their loss. He was a wonderful man.
So very sad to lose Frank. I will always remember the times over the years we spent strolling together around the picnic spot looking for the lbjs. I will miss his smile. I will miss him.

This is such sad news. My condolences and thoughts are with his family.

I had the privilege of meeting Frank at Pafuri a number of times and he was a true gentleman, with poise and grace that few people ever attain. He passing is a great loss to SANParks and the wider birding community. He will be sorely missed. He made the world a better place.

What a shock! What an untimely loss to his family, Pafuri picnic site which he 'owned', the Kruger Park, and to the many of us that spent very happy minutes with him being shown where the birds were hiding. What do you say... :shock:

....RIP Frank.

On one of my visits to Pafuri/Punda, I gave Frank a Stiffnecks cap, which he subsequently wore.

He was one of us!

Throughout the history of Kruger, there were people who just worked there, and then there were the legends, like Frank. His knowledge and wisdom about the bush and birds specifically, cannot be found in books.

What sad news - I only read about this today! :cry:

Frank was really a remarkable man. All of us that have met him, will remember him for his enjoyment of the birds around his Pafuri Picnic Spot - and how he shared that with others. But even more than that - I will remember how he really looked after that picnic spot. How he took pride in his job. How he made a difference where he was. If everybody would work and live with that kind of attitude the world would be a much better place. He will be missed!

Frank Your name will always be associated with Pafuri .You were a great man and we are all very sad !
But be sure that all of us, when visiting Pafuri again,we will have you in our heart .R.I.P

Last time we met was in may 2016 and as usual you were very busy taking care of your place to make sure all visitors will feel at home :clap:

I met Frank in Pafuri in August 2012. We spoke of birds, but even more of cameras. He had at the time a Canon 400D.
Ten days later I was at the Punda Maria gate leaving the Park. Frank as coincidence would have it was there, and we had a good chat. I asked - planning ahead - where I might find the Gorgeous Bush-Shrike. No sooner had I said the words than Frank whistled its beautiful song.
It was a fine memory and is now a treasured one.

May Frank rest in peace and may his family be comforted.
