Kgalagadi Leopard identification

Unread post by inado »

We had some great leopard sightings during our stay in April / May 2012. We were very happy about it. :D

20 April 2012 (17:30) – MIERA
1.5km north from "Montrose".
We are that time entire alone with the leopard. We can observe them for a long time. A magnificent experience.

23 April 2012 (17:15) – MIERA
We came from Kieliekrankie. MIERA was crossing the lower dune road (just before the Auob road).
She goes to the south and disappeared over the dune. We hope that she wants to "Auchterlonie".
And ... correct. Approximately an hour later she arrived there for a drink. :D

Kgalagadi Leopard identification

From: Fourth time "lucky" in Kgalagadi - May 2012.
Under Travel Tales

On 5 May we had this sighting a few hundred meters from Batulama waterhole. She ( Miera ) was resting in the shade at 2:45 pm and I did not expect her to get up. We were told of Cheetahs further on and we drove on.

@anne-marie - Lovely sighting of Safran. I agree with AstroMatt - she does look very pregnant. Great that you saw her again! Also, you were lucky with all the sightings of Miera - again a very interesting sighting with the hyena and kill.

@AstroMatt - Welcome back and thanx for the info.

My own sighting was on the 11th November at Montrose, at about 7am.
We came across Miera lying in a tree at the side of the road. She proceeded to come down and cross in front of us heading up the calcrite ridge. She then reappeared at the water hole only to be chased up a tree by a couple of huge lions (the recently collared boys!). After a 30min wait she decide to come down and make a dash for it again crossing in front of us!

We had the pleasure of sharing about 1 hour with this gorgeous creature all on our own just south of Gemsbokplein WH! The sighting started with him/her stretched out under a tree. After a while he/she got up and sauntered across the riverbed. The something in the bushes caught its attention. Much to our surprise, an AWC hightailed it out of there, straight across the riverbed and over the ridge! The leopard was NOT impressed!!

If you clever 'mites could help with an ID it would be much appreciated! Tried to get all the angles, but I sometimes just forgot to take :cam:

Kgalagadi Leopard identification

Unread post by AstroMatt »

Before i forget, this is the sighting that i was sent by Carin Malan last week. The sighting happened on 28/08/2010, approximately 4kms north of Urikaruus. It shows Khomani and Miera. This sighting is 2 months earlier than the one IainP had on p14 (http://www.sanparks.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=18567&start=195)
It is hard to see much of a change between IainP and Carin's photos (especially when you look at the face) which demonstrates how important these historical sightings are for trying to get the best possible age. So if you have historical sightings that you don't think i have on record do please send them to me using the website.

Incidentally Miera was last seen at Auchterlonie on the 3/4/2013, so she is still doing well :D
