Hi everyone

This was the first leopard, a female seen 2kms south of Grootkolk. We saw her as she took down a springbok in the river bed about 50m from the road so pics not great even with the big glass.

We only had 10mins with her as we had to get back to camp.

Image

We went out first thing the next morning and manged to relocate on her as she had now moved the carcass about 30m under a big camel thorn. She fed then left giving us 5/5 visual with good pic opportunities.

Maybe you can ID her?

Edited: IainP's leopard - Safran.

@IainP - Fantastic sighting and pix!  Wow! To see a leopard take down a springbok! What a great 40th Bday present! Thank you for sharing your pix with us!

 I can't ID your leopard, she is not Sidwemn's leopard. If you have a more detailed pic of the left side of her face, compare it with anne-marie's leopard , and please let us know the outcome. :hmz: Or it could be another female?

OK, so i had an interesting picture sent to me to ID from p@m.
I've decided that it would make the perfect photo for an ID challenge. To keep it fun for everyone please pm me your answer before Saturday morning. I shall then post the answer and who got it right. To add a little spice to the mix the first person to get the correct answer to me can suggest a name for the new Dikbaardskolk Cub No.2 (will be in the new version of the guide).

So below is p@m's photo. As a starting hint it was taken in the Nossob river.

Happy IDing and goodluck :D

Reporting back on the ID Challenge:

Image

This was Safran, seen by p@m on the 29th October 2010, near Kannaguass.

Image

(Compare the spot patterns on the visible parts of her back leg/bum. )Thank you p@m! :D

As we have had a few comments about forumites struggling with IDing, an easier ID challenge will be posted in the near future!

Safran

Unread post by AFRICAT »

(These were taken VERY far away, so ID may not be possible. I do thank whomever puts in the time to try and help me. Very much appreciated.)

These were taken Oct. 20, 2011 just outside (south) Grootkolk, but before the first waterhole. The female was just walking through the grass when a large male, hidden in the grasses, ran at her. She lept into the nearest tree, and a standoff ensued. As the sun got hotter and hotter he decided to go up after her, but she would have none of it. Seems their views on family planning didn't coincide, at least for that day.

These are pics of Safran seen at 5:30 PM Oct. 10, 2012 at the Lifersdraai waterhole. She then made her way across the road and headed south. It's nice to see she is looking so healthy (at least to my eye). What a beauty she is!

I saw, this one at Lijersdraai, 22.9, waiting for a Hyena leave the present carcass
:hmz: Could be Safran (I hope) but marked a plant with her head...
my question : female mark territory ?

Kgalagadi Leopard identification

Thanks for all the sightings that have been posted recently. Its great to see that the leopards are coming out of the wood work again.

@AFRICAT - great sighitng of Safran, thanks for posting...more about your sighting later

@Anne-Marie, your wish came true, you did see Safran at Lijersdraai  , i also can't help thinking that she looks really pregnant in your pics and not in AFRICATS!...also given Wanderws info it seems highly likely that the mum and cub is Safran and a new addition :D  Hopefully someone will get some pics of the cub

Great pictures and welcome to the forum Jaco.

When I was in the park in Dec I kept hearing of rumours of a leopard with a cub on the Nossob side around the Lijersdraai waterhole. However, nobody I met had any photos that they could show me.
But I received an email from Mario Fazekas (kruger-to-kalahari website) that finally allowed the mystery of who it was to be put to bed.

Thanks to Mario  we know that Safran is currently a proud mum or a leopard who is probably around 4-6 months old (age is very difficult so please take this with a pinch of salt  )

Mario's sighting was at 18:00 on the 22 November 2012.

@AstroMatt and Mario Fazekas - Thank you for the evidence!

As AstroMatt said, the 'rumour no more' of the leopard and cub at Ljiersdraai has been around KTP for some time. Mario saw Safran and the cub on the 22nd of November. If anybody else out there has pix of Safran and her cub, please post.
