KTP Leopard: Auchterlonie Female

Unread post by IainP »

This leopard was named after the Auchterlonie area where she used to be seen quite regularly

@ AstroMatt & Wanderw

You are right, I mixed up Rooiputs and Rooibrak  my mistake. Your ID of the cub is spot on!

We also spotted what I think is the Auchterlonie male, not as per Carolz on page 7, but PeterBee's unidentified male. This male leo is large with a very square face and thick neck. His is very confident and relaxed. We saw him about 1km south of Auchterlonie in a tree.

What do you think?

So now i have a story of pictures that i hope you all believe. It will nicely piece together a number of leopards on this and other threads.

The first report on the forum was of a leopard by bushbuddies (page 11). This i have managed to match to a picture by Jumbo on the Kgalagadi: Kieliekrankie Wilderness Camp forum, note both leg and side matches.
viewtopic.php?f=38&t=8388&start=60
First Bushbuddies image, scaled up a bit and with markings.
Image
Then Jumbo's image with markings
Image

Then i have matached Jumbo's image to IaniP's image he posted on the 4/11/2011
Jumbo's and IainP's pictures. Note side and forehead markings.
ImageImage

I then believe that i have matched a left hand side picture taken by Bushbuddies to one taken by Malealea's sister Janina in June 2010 (posted by wanderw in, WANTED: Twee Rivieren Leopard and 2 cubs - Regular Updates!, viewtopic.php?f=38&t=26529&start=210)
Bushbuddies picture
Image
Janina/Malealea's image
Image

Now Malealea's sister saw this leopard with a cub, so we can definitely say it is female.
So i'm going to say sorry IainP your leopard isn't a new one...and isn't male  , but very interesting that she is now so big.

What do you guys think?

This will be my very bad contribution to this amazing thread.

Leopards are the one thing we've never seen much of over the years................. :(

The other one was on 18/12/2010 just after 10H00. It made a beeline across the road 4 kilometers before Auchterlonie and the went up the ridge and within minutes it was gone.

Sorry about the quality of the photos and compared to some of these others it would be the 8th wonder if these could be identified................

@Lion Queen - Thanks for posting. The first picture you post is of the big Rooibrak Male :D , see Wanderw's earlier photos.
As for your second, i first saw your leopard on the ridge picture in the "Can't Get Enough" thread. I had a feeling that i knew this leopard, and sorry Jo it's not the Auchterlonie Male. Your second photo makes it much easier to identify and confirms my earlier suspicions.
I believe that it is the same leopard that Bushbuddies, Jumbo, IainP, and Malealea's sister Janina saw...and now Lion Queen

@RichardJ - I think your KielieKrankie leo is the same as Bushbuddies, Jumbo, lion queen, Janina and IainP's. What do you think AstroMatt?

WOW!!! What an amazing sighting of a flying leopard   That is surely a once in a life time sighting!
You saw the Auchterlonie Female, the mum of the now famous Cagn (many sightings at Leeuwdril).
