KTP Leopard: No. 12 (Maja's cub)

Unread post by Touareg »

Named after markings above eye which looked like a 12.

Here are two pics of two young leopards photographed near Houmoed in June 2010. The one I call Number 12 as you can see a number 12 above its left eye. The other photo is a bit further and in shade which shows the two siblings together. There is speculation that they may be Maja's kids.

KTP Leopard: No. 12 (Maja's cub)

Unread post by wanderw »

Edited - Tourareg's post - No. 12 and Twin.

@Touareg - a lovely sighting! :mrgreen: :thumbs_up:

I think there is a very strong possibility that they are Maja's cubs. They are in her home range(Houmoed is one of her favourite areas), and there have been no other reports of another female leopard with 2 cubs!

Lovely sightings Luca...thanks for sharing them here as well as emailing them to me. :thumbs_up:
The sighting of the leopard at Samevloeiing. This is No12, one of Maja's cubs. However, he/she was only born (roughly) around November 2009. From the picture i have the feeling that this sighting was actually on the 5th October 2010? :hmz:

Thanks a lot for all these wonderful sightings.

@Tony T - I believe this young leopard is No. 12, the last known cub of Maya. What date in October did you see this leo? Maja was relocated near Nossob in October 2010. A little while later No. 12 was relocated near Nossob as well. You might have been the last person to see this little one.

Many thanks for posting! :gflower:

@Wandaw, Thanks for the ID - I took the photos on 3/10 /10 and these 2 the following day (I think) in the same area, so assume its the same leo. All taken very late afternoon (ISO challenged light).

@TonyT - Thanks again! :thumbs_up: Yes, this is the same young leo that you saw the previous day(check the spots on the right front leg). No. 12 would have been just over 9/10 months then.

Lovely sighting of No12 TonyT. The last record I have of her was on the 5th October. So you were certainly one of the last to see her.

Just to reiterate Arks and Wanderws comments, historical sightings (as well as current ones) are really important to understanding the larger picture on the leopard dynamics in the park.
