I knew it as Sjambok pod (and I’ve only been in SA since 1975) and a 1997 book only calls it Sjambok pod - so guess name changed after that. So many trees and birds changed names - very confusing

The Encephalartos genus of cycad native to Africa. Several species of Encephalartos are commonly referred to as bread trees, since bread-like starchy food can be prepared from the centre of the stem.
