Dear Forumites,

With the recent statistics regarding the *** and elephants in the Kruger National Park, we would like to request that when posting pictures of *** and elephants on the forum, please DO NOT GIVE OUT THE TIME, DATE AND LOCATION OF THE SIGHTING.

Thank You.

I'm so glad that elephants are now included. I wonder about the wisdom of including either in, for example a TR. Most people advertise when they are going, and most TRs are written as a consecutive daily diary. It is very sad that one should have to think this way.

Thank you Lesego, and thank you for posting Elsa.

I agree with salamanda 100%. Maybe one should think about posting Elephant and *** photos at the end of a trip report without giving any information about the day or time when seen. It would really be sad if one don't see any Ellie or *** pictures in trip reports. If put at the end of a trip report, we could still enjoy the beautiful sightings. :hmz:

That is what I thought I would do Hilda.
Have a special epilogue to our beautiful Ellies and Rhinos. We would so miss all those photos of the ellies playing in water and the little babies, as well as the wonderful rhinos.

What will happen in the case of threads dedicated to a waterhole at a Hide, like Punda Maria or Lake Panic and photos taken of elephant at Lower Sabie/Sabie River, which is so recognisable, even if we dont say where the photo was taken?

So true Tessa G! I was also thinking about those, but have no answer for it, other than that we then should not post it. But we will then miss out on so many stunning pictures of these gorgeous animals! :(

So very sad Hilda :(

If it saves the lives of *** and elephant then it has to be a good thing but so sad that we will be unable to enjoy photos taken in these beautiful areas. :(

And what about the Tusker ID thread. Is that going underground? It should if it hasn't already done so, because those tuskers need to be the fathers (or sometimes mothers) of many children for the future . . . .

The Tusker thread is still going strong salamanda, but I appreciate your view on the issue.

Hilda perhaps you could carry this forward? It would be insane to stop people from reporting Elephant sightings in TR's if these genetically important tuskers are going to remain at risk. People need to PM their info, and receive replies as PMs too.

Hi all

When the implementation of including ellies in the guideline linked to by Elsa in the OP, was discussed with SANParks the following two points were made:

- Kruger need all the help they can get to fight the poaching war.

- Rhinos are more territorial and remain in a smaller area than ellies do.

We have been asked not to give info of date, time and place - we do not want to stop the sharing of pictures. We are aware that some photos actually give the location anyway from the surroundings. We do have to work out what is best to do with the cam sightings etc, but it is a learning curve. Which ellies are going to be most targeted - certainly those with sizable tusks.

Perhaps the waterholes at the cams are the safest when it comes to poising the water ... we have 24/7 surveillance there.

Where are are right now on this is :

- Kruger needs all the help they can get with the poaching war.

We still want to encourage folk to share sightings, but to be mindful that by doing so there is no way this will compromise the efforts in the park.

I have always posted my *** pictures together either at the beginning or end of my TR but didn't realise about the Elephants as well  Perhaps a new announcement in the TR forum might be an idea to let everyone know as I only stumbled into here by accident today .

It makes perfect sense though especially with the recent Elephant poaching that has been going on
