Olifants River Walk (Day walk)

Unread post by nancybsimmons »

I cannot seem to find any information on when the guided River Walk at Olifants Camp takes place. Is it a morning or afternoon activity?

Hi Nancy and Welcome!

From what I recall, the river walk is a (mid)morning activity, I think it departs at 9am. But it also is not always offered, it will depend on whether there are rangers available to guide it. Perhaps you might want to send an email to the camp's manager?

I'm lucky enough to be booked on just such a walk on Wednesday next week. My booking states that the start time is 9:00 1 October - 31 March and 9:30 1 April to 30 September but also advises to confirm departure time at reception in advance.

Details can also be found on the Olifants rest camp page.

I've not taken a guided walk before so really looking forward to it.

Thanks John, that helps a lot. I will add this to the activities forum for safe keeping and future reference as we have had this query before!
Enjoy your walk!

John, the River Walk is an excellent intro to walks in Kruger. It is a little less strenous - but one does have to climb down sandy banks into the little creeks and back up. It is a stunningly beautiful walk. My SO wrote about our first walk here many years ago, I see we need to update some picture links, but you will get an idea of the walk.

Of course the floods since that piece was written have changed the river bank somewhat, and also cleared out many of the lovely old trees.

Thanks for that information Elsa. I notice there is a maximum age restriction in that link you posted for the Olifants River Walk, but I don't see any maximum age restriction on the guided walks page.

http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger/tourism/activities/guided_walks.php

My father is 66 and he would love to do some guided walks and we were hoping to do the Olifants River Walk, but due to that age restriction won't be able to, but I'm hoping he could do the other guided walks. Is there anyone that could shed some light on this? Is there a maximum age on the guided walks or is it only the Olifants River Walk with the restriction?

Bobbejaantjie, all the walks carry the same age restrictions of minimum 12 and max 65.
But if your Dad gets a letter from his doctor certifying that he is in good enough health to do a walk then there will be no problems.
Then you just need to show it to them when checking in for the walk itself.
