A Mapungubwe must, but it is not for the feint hearted. Unfortunately no wheelchair access.

A few pictures of the Mapungubwe Hill outing.

This is where I watch the sunrise.

I am usually the first up in the morning, so this is what others missed.

The Mapunbubwe baboons are also unique.

Image

Image

In the early morning they can be seen hanging from rocks. The leopard is their most deadly enemy and they have adapted he most unique survival strategies.

We stopped at the pool on our way to Mapungubwe hill.

I just loved the reflections.

I was told by one of the rangers that the ellies travel between Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa on a fairly regular basis. When the rivers are low it is easy for them to cross.

The first time I went, the rivers were low and I saw lots of ellies. The second time we saw only one. The second time, the river was too high for the elles to cross and they could not get into Mapungunwe.

Another Mapungubwe ellie from the back.

Just, so chilled. I had to switch my engine off and just wait.

Addo ellies

Very chilled, which is surprising, given Harpoor's reputation for aggression. He is the common ancestor for most of these ellies. It just shows the damage that trauma and hunting can do though. He must have watched his own family been taken in ellie carnage.

Now that is real detail.

This is the only ellie we saw when the river was high. Again, big ellie, small tusks.

A special feature of Mapungubwe is the canopy walk.

I have seen one Gemsbok from a distance.

Here is rather a good looking Mapungubwe fellow. He looks like royalty.

I read that a leopard was frequently seen close to Leokwe. Certainly the biggest danger to these critters.

The baboons way of sleeping in Mapungubwe must be one of the most amazing adaptations.
