Africa Geographic - The issues

Unread post by Salva »

Since two years I am a subscriber to this magazine and every month I look forward to receiving it.

What I like especially about it (related to SANP) is that when there are articles about the parks in it, it is more from a conservation point of vue than from a touristic one. The article about the addo lions in the october issue, for instance, was delightful to read.

Any more subscribers to this fantastic magazine?

Have also subscibed for 3 years now, awesome magazine. Read it front to back cover as soon as it arrives!
Do you also get the Africa Birds and Birding, by the same group? Just as good to read :D and did you get the special edition of the best photo's? I posted a little while back about that.

Nice story on Makuleke and Pafuri Camp

It was nice to see an article about the Makuleke in Africa Geographic. It's just a shame that only guest of private lodges (Pafuri Camp and The Outpost) can enjoy the amazing landscape.

The sad thing though is that the private lodges use only a fraction of the available roads. The roads used most commonly by the lodges are the roads from Pafuri Camp down to Crooks Corner (Luvuvhu East), the road from Luvuvhu bridge running west parallel to the Luvuvhu (Luvuvhu West), the road leading to Lanner Gorge and the tar road from the Luvuvhu bridge to Pafuri gate. There are however amazing roads running close to the Limpopo river which are never used by them. Only the anti-poaching squad and the EcoTraining camp uses these roads because they are generally hard to travel on (fallen trees and low hanging branches). Sadly the most scenic spots of the Makuleke are on these roads and guest don't get to see them :?

(yes, I know I promised to post pictures of the Makuleke a while ago, I'll try to put some up soon)

The ultimate elephant issue

Unread post by pardus »

Hi Everyone

I just got a copy of the new Africa Geographic. The WHOLE issue is dedicated to elephants and there are various articles with reference to Kruger and SANPARKS.

If you can, please get a copy - it's fantastic reading with good insight articles. Of course the culling debate is also in there.

For those of you who cannot get a hard copy, try the website, it has featuring articles.

Have an elephantfantastic day and happy Easter to everyone who celebrates this day!

I am busy ploughing my way through my copy, bought yesterday and there is an awful lot of reading, but really fascinating and gives the views of the pro and anti culling brigade. Really brings home tho what an emotional and stirring issue this has become.

Africa Geographic May Issue

If you don't buy it - just look at this month's front page - you will not resist.

Very interesting article about Spotted Hyenas.

Page 12 : Info about the Emerging Tusker Project and also on the three night trail launched at Olifants - (we need a group of eight Forumers - anyone interested?)

Page 10 - Peter Piper - you will drool when you see this!

Page 34 - Nice one about the Otter trial.

And hopefully after this issue, we will be more informed about our consumption and waste of marine resources.

The photographer in question has already won a place in the BBC wildlife as young photographer 8)

apparently the photograph of the fish eagle caused quite a stir! several people voiced doubts about the authenticity because it is so impressive! They wonder if it was a "digital hoax"! Africa Geographic investigated and says this is not the case!

Africa Geographic : July Issue

Unread post by pardus »

A very informative article on animal diseases and especially about avian flu.

Some super stuff on cats, a new monkey found in Tanzania and a very tempting invite to the Outpost in the KNP Maluleke consession. On the crawley side, read about golden orb-web spiders and the humble but vital work of insects in the cycle of life.

Also of interest Ian Michler's article on new legislation on canned hunting.

As always, the front page is awesome, and this issue's is huggable and incredibly cute!

Happy reading

Africa Geographic August Issue

See our SANParks writing competition on page 19 and also read about the award given to Boulders Penguin Colony in CT on page 18.

Controversial topic - elephant rides are addressed in an article "On the back of Gaints".

Bat eared Foxes - I really don't know much about these creatures, but the article was enlightning - another woman in conservation doing a great job! (Sorry, need to get excited about women taking care of mother earth)

On page 38, an exciting over of the Peace Parks Foundation - check out Machampane Tented Camp in the Lebombo Mountains....

Changelings, page 26, babies are tough cookies from day one and page 30 brings good tidings about the wonder of water in nature. (And some pretty nice photographs to boot!)

I'm naughty now, but there's a mouthwatering model on page 9 that got me really exited....

Have you seen it's specialist twin magazine Africa Birds and Birding ...Brilliant I subscribe to that instead.
