Identification Help – Tuskers

Unread post by RosemaryH »

As per a new forum rule, the procedure of identifying a named tusker had to be amended.

To ensure a correct identification and to avoid a duplication of a named tusker, in accordance with the database structured and maintained by SANParks, please continue to post any photographs of elephants (possible tuskers) here for identification.

By submitting your photographs and information here, you give permission that SANParks may use your material to update the Tusker’s specific Forum topic. Your contribution/s will be acknowledged.

To enable the enlargement of photos during the ID-ing process and for data base purposes, it will be appreciated if your photos could be E-mailed to [email protected].

I will submit the request for identification to the SANParks team and report back here.

Once a positive identification has been made, the photograph and details posted by you will then be moved into that specific tuskers unique topic. This will enable ‘mites to have all the information with reference to each officially named tusker and any updated photographs, details and information reported on the tusker available in one specific tusker topic.
The unnamed elephants will be moved to the SANParks Elephants topic.

Just to make sure that all current and new 'mites do understand what happens to their original requests for your ID-ing that is posted on the "Identification Help - Tuskers" thread, here is the process that is followed:

1. RosemaryH will forward your request to SANParks that will comment and will form part of the reply as a "Quote" and this will be posted as a reply on the "Identification Help - Tuskers" thread.

2. The next step by RosemaryH will be to transfer the original request with the SANParks reply to either the specific tuskers topic as can be seen in this example:

Request Here and
reply Here.

OR

If it was not identified as a tusker, the request and reply from SANParks will be transferred to the "SANParks Elephants" thread as can be seen in this example:

Request and reply Here and Here.

I hope this will help when visiting the "SANParks Tuskers" environment Here and that everybody will share their sightings of this unique species with us on the forums  .

Hi Rosemary, am a fan of big tuskers but need some clarity from Kirsty please?
We seem to have "past tuskers", "emerging tuskers" and "unsure of status tuskers", does this mean there are no elephants currently that qualify as tuskers or am I misunderstanding?
Many thanks
Gavin

Hi Gavin E

I certainly will get Kirsty to clarify this for you.

I would suggest that the officially named "emerging tuskers" are the current tuskers in the park.

Thanks for the query

Morning Gavin E

Regarding your question :)

We only name them once they are big enough to qualify and we are sure they will continue to develop. We kept them grouped under the term emerging as one they have either ‘emerged as large tuskers’ and secondly given that some of them are still developing (emerging) but are large enough to note.

I hope that clarifies the concern.

Hi Rosemary,

Saw this boy in September. I am not sure if he is on the emerging list. I will PM the location to you.
I do have another couple of larger tuskers that I will upload.

We saw this fellow late one evening during August. Am I correct in assuming that this is Tsotsi?

WOW! Cantona what a treat

My thoughts are:

1) Possibly Xindzulundzulu
2) Ndlovane and
3) :hmz: :hmz: Botsotso

Do you perhaps have a shot of the 3rd bull which shows a bit more of the bottom of his left ear?

I have submitted your request and will get confirmation on the ID's asap and post back here.

Thanks so much for sharing these.

Hi Rosemary
Unfortunately not, the angle of his walk never showed us much of that side :(
Looking forward to the ID confirmations, thank you.
