Kruger in March

Unread post by kite »

Granny's topic, April in Kruger, has given us a different aspect from which to see the park.
We could have a separate topic for each month of the year.
The headline "March in Kruger" could also mean a demo walk so I changed it to "Kruger in March"!
So, what can you tell us?
Lush vegetation, migrant birds fattening up for departure flights, youngsters finding their feet, some days and nights a little cooler!

Went to Kruger in March a few years ago.

The bush was thick, but generally it wasn't a problem.
One of my best trips.

Lots of Carmine Bee Eaters around!

Been in Kruger 3 times in March
Little rain
lots of birds
many of youngers
mind you, you can have some hot days
always had a few of 40 degrees.

The only area i do avoid is Pretoriuskop in march
grass can be as high as 3 meters.

Towards the end of March, in the south, we did see a few woodland kingfishers and carmine bee-eaters but no sign of the kites!
The golden orb spiders were spinning away.
The bush was very thick and green, but we still managed good mammal sightings by spending most of our time out there searching!

For a realistic impression of the park in March, I don't think you can do better than to read Noel's trip report titled
"Noel Kruger in a somber mood in March ( April 2012 )"
We were in similar areas over the same dates this year and had nearly as many good sightings.
Noel has a great balance between photos and comments and includes
"all things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small"
Thanks to Noel, I relived my trip. Sorry I missed it when it was originally being posted but glad to have found it eventually.

Imo the best part of Kruger to visit in March
Birdlife is prolific.
While the south is more dense you will have less touble searching in the Satara area
It can get hot and if you are unlucky humid but that goes for the whole of Kruger in march

This year in March we saw many more rollers than were around last year at the same time!
Most of them were European rollers, and they were on every bush and tree next to the roads, ready to swoop down on tasty prey including juicy grasshoppers.
The Carmine bee-eaters were also abundant and great to watch their graceful forays from their perches.
The recent floods followed by the heat and sun meant that vegetation was lush, insects abundant, and everything was thriving,or so it seemed to us!
The dark shadow though, was our lack of *** sightings but we may have been exceptionally luck with this on our previous trips.

kite - I agree that the KNP was looking very lush and green this March. In fact, game viewing was a bit difficult because the grass and bushes were so thick. Looks as if the abundant grass etc. will keep the animals well-fed most of the winter.

We also saw lots of European Rollers - far more of them than Lilac-breasted Rollers - and Carmine Bee-eaters. Raptors were good, but I have seen more on trips in late-November/early-December.

Any time in KNP is a privilege - we are going again in mid-May. Can't wait!

Kruger in March

Hello...have booked a trip in March 2017. Ive been to Kruger 6 times but always in the winter...this is my first time in March. What am I in for? What will the temp be like...should we expect a lot of rain. I am guessing the park will be green, which I have never seen. 5 days in Biyamiti and 6 in Berg en Dal. Very excited about this new view of wonderful Kruger. Thanks, Don

Been to kruger in march twice.

First time was quite lush and quite warm. Still saw quite a bit, due tend to see more reptiles/snakes then in our normal june/july time.

Second trip was during the current drought. Was quite good. Easier to see then the previous time.

One thing that is different compared to our normal winter time is you tend to see more young antelope so that is quite nice.

As far as rain didn't see much on either trip, maybe the odd shower.

I would avoid pretoriuskop and berg en dal, that area seemed quite lush compared to the other areas each time.

Sorry to reply to an old thread. The link does not work. And I can't find Noel Kruger in a somber mood in March ( April 2012 ) either. Any pointers?

Thanks

Try this now, but unfortunately the photos were affected by the Photobucket issues and are not all that clear.
