Orpen webcam live video streaming - beta phase

Unread postby lizef » Tue Sep 18, 2012 2:12 pm

Please note that we have implemented the beta testing phase of our live video streaming of the Orpen webcam.
This essentially means that you will be able to view the live streaming at the following link: http://www.sanparks.org/interact/multimedia/videocams/videos.php?cam=orpen, but please be considerate of the fact that this is a beta test and that technical difficulties may still be experienced. Viewing the live video stream of the webcam requires a lot of bandwidth and requires a high-speed Internet line. Should you not be able to optimally view the video stream, we suggest that you view the still webcam images: http://www.sanparks.org/webcams/

We ask that you be so kind as to inform us of any issues you might experience at the following email address:
webmaster@sanparks.org

Also, please don't hesitate to let us hear the things you like about the live Orpen webcam too! :)

Hi picnic
You will be able to save an image as the latest highlight but not a video clip.

As Lize said in an earlier post, the live video feed from Orpen is still in beta testing phase and changes are still being made to the video feed you are seeing via your browser. Compression, frame rates, bandwidth issues, etc. are all part of the video feed jargon!

A forumite asked earlier about live sound on the video feed..not available at the moment!

Enjoy this beta testing phase and lets hope for excellent cooperation from our four legged friends in Kruger National Park (Orpen) to show themselves on camera - they are after all now live on video and also part of the test..they should put their best foot/hoof/paw forward!

A special thanks to the whole team involved in making this happen - a milestone we have been waiting for a loooooong time! Thanks guys and girls!

Happy camming and viewing...live!

tsk tsk, the server knows you don't want nice multimedia wallpapers, and is responding in tit-for-tat behavior :)

Arks, do you have any adblock software installed on your machine as per the posts within the forum problems topic? Are you able to view videos on facebook and youtube?
If I agreed with you we'd both be wrong.

Hey picnic,

Its a nice idea, but I would be one to vote no for it on the simple basis it would detract from the forums, and the webcams are unison with forums, and would like to see it remain that way.

 I understand. But the web cam watchers would like to chat while watching the the waterhole. Why sit alone when you can have a chat with fellow web cam watchers? :? :hmz: We will chat in silence. :D I don't think that will effect the forum in any way. It can only gain members.

Problem: spammers!
They will very happily use that. I don't think anyone is waiting for that?

Picnic, I would vote yes.
I think it's a great idea to have a chat with the cam.
I also don't think it will distract from the forum. I think most of the cammers aren't a forum member. So I think it's easy way for first timers to ask some questions and redirect them to the forum.
Another use of the chat is to learn something about the animals and there behavior. I can imagine that a lot people what's to now why certain animals behave like that.
And of course to have a little chat is always nice.

What about the spammers, I don't think it will be a real problem. Just make sure that there is some kind of banning system and than it will be okay.
I don't see a lot of spam on the forums, so why would it be different for the chat?

LOL!
Thanks for the compliment! :gflower:
Today only we have banned and deleted a dozen spammers, so we are more or less on schedule for the day. (We ban two dozen at least per day.)

A chat window would be impossible to monitor for the mods, and we do not have admin rights.....

That are probably automatic forum spammers. They automatically search the web for this kind of forums. They have found ways to automatically make new accounts and than spam.
They are on every forum, but you can make it difficult, to make edits to the forum.
So those kind of spammers you won't find in the chat. Mainly people that are, manually, say click this link and get 10% off by safari tour x.

I don't think you have to monitor it frequently. And if there are problems, people post them on the forum and the mods can maybe ban someone.
And if they use for example irc, than you don't have to make any tools and there can be managed easily by multiple "mods" and admins.
