1. The Rock Art Mapping Project for the KNP has been approved by Scientific Services. Now the planning and the funding proposal writing starts....
2. African World Heritage Fund Conference later this month. I will be attending as an official delegate. And see there is delegates from SANParks. Which is good as the theme is "Communities and Sustainable Developement and World Heritage Sites".

Todays topic is advice for Honorary Rangers and others on maintaining cemetries, memorials and other historical sites.

The following maintenance procedures does not require permits from any Heritage Resource Agency but will require input from Park officials and Interested and Affected Parties such as decendents in the case of graves:

1. Weeding
2. Maintening of fences (the erection of new fences might require permits)
3. Mowing
4. Painting (best to contact the relevent Heritage Resources Agency for input on memorials and structures over 60 years of age)
5. Picking up of litter!!!!
6. Sweeping of pathways
7. Weeding of pathways
8. Management of visitors books
9. Dusting of displays, after being trained by professional staff

These activities will take little time but greately assist SANPark staff. Offer your services now!

For a long time I have been concerned about the lack of activity around historical areas. I also think that it would be helpful to identify other areas of importance.

Fully agree with you! The Protected Areas Act never once puts nature above culture and cultural sites and interpretation can value add so much to a visitors enjoyment and understanding of a National Park. And each Park has a unique and interesting human history attached to it! The idea of a protected area itself is a cultural concept!

I have always seen history as adding value to our future. Honouring our past, is about protecting our roots. Without healthy roots, there is no future.

I also think that there is much more scope for "honouring" the personalities and history of each individual Park. Much has been written about the KNP (e.g. Neem uit die verlede, A Game Ranger Remembers, etc) but what is lacking is a well recorded and researched "biography" all Parks. Not just to record the actual history but also to leave a valuable history of conservation behind. It is always interesting to see how the focus in each Park changes as new people and issues arrive. And as always..... valuable lessons to be learned....
