Cricket in the Cradle and a mystery guest

Unread post by Meandering Mouse »

I am having a very special person visit me soon. This special person, who joined in 2009 and has made 10535 posts to date will be leaving on the day of the cricket. She will not be going to Skukuza, but somewhere slightly more north.

To reach here, she would have passed through time zones, so the chance of "just popping in" will not happen for some time again.

I thought that it would be lovely for us Gautengers, unable to go to the cricket, to still be able to meet and enjoy the day. My guest is leaving rather early, so it would have to start with a breakfast meet. It can go on for as long as is needed.

In case you don't know, I live in the Cradle area.

with lots of opportunity for bird watching.

For anyone interested in an unusual birding experience, I promise to take you on a special raptor surprise, starting at about 2:30.

It would also be a wonderful way to raise funds for the mobile cam. Any thoughts there would be great.

There are some lovely ideas coming out 8)

Duke, I hope that you and Sharifa have an absolutely stunning time.

So far, LS has suggested at folk looking to pledge a certain amount for each bird.

Lets hope that this one was not listening

Duke is going the big bird route, thanks Duke. People will be thrilled to see what is going on in my part of the cradle. I promise that there will be a big heart warming surprise for anyone who stays on.

This is one of my more noisy critters.

Maybe you should make it 6:30 on 5 April at Primi Piatti in Camps Bay.

That way, it gives some people time to get home from work, you might get to see some of the sunset and it won't be that late for those that have to get up early the next day.

p@m, can you possibly co-ordinate the numbers and book - I am snowed under at work. :gflower:

Gauteng Meet - Braai at Rietvlei

Unread post by WendyA »

A few of us have been talking about arranging another get-together at Rietvlei on Saturday 21 April. To date there's myself, Cheetah2111, Flutterby, Barryels and Hilda and we'd love to see as many other "forum friends" as possible.

No definite plans as yet apart from the date, but maybe something along the lines of meeting up at either the picnic spot area or the area by the cafe (braais available at both sites) late morning/midday-ish and spending the afternoon there. If we all bring our dop and chop, then once we know who can make it, we can arrange stuff like charcoal, fire lighters, salads, bread rolls, etc ...

Please leave a note here or you can PM me so we can get an idea of numbers then finalise things closer to the date.

Hope to see as many of you as possible! :D :D :D

True, BB - :(

Either doing it your way next time (but always leaving food
and drink behind - now, that should be interesting  )
or ask the restaurant to set up a square lay out for the tables.

Still it was a great night out!
Loved to meet some new faces :yaya: Rookie, Rusty and RichardJ.
And were happy to meet up again with people we already knew - :yaya: p@m & SO and BB & SO!

Thanks so much for organizing this for us all, p@m :gflower:

And thanks for doing the long trek, in some cases, to come and meet Spots and me! :k

BTW, I had my camera with me as well...

@ Lionspoon...it was great meeting you and Spots up at Kirstenbosch :D ...I am sorry that the birds didn't really play along though  .... but at least the owl was in residence

As promised.... a list of the birds that we saw.....

Spotted Eagle Owl
Malachite Sunbird
Orange-breasted Sunbird
Southern Double-collared Sunbird
Black Saw-wing
Black Sparrowhawk
Jackal Buzzard alongside what I am convinced of (when I look at my extremely “blurd” photo) is an African Harrier Hawk
Pied Crow
Eygptian Goose
Cape Spurfowl
Hadeda Ibis
Red-winged Starling
Cape Canary

We heard the loud-mouthed Karoo Prinia as well as the Sombre Greenbul.

Oh and let’s not forget the dove that we saw high up in a tree outside the restaurant…

Oh and the big butterfly that I was so excited about is called a “Table Mountain Beauty”

And I had such an amazing sighting of an African Goshawk on the way home !!!
(which you can see here )

I am pleased that you have arrived home safely  and enjoy looking forward to your next KTP trip...:)

Re: Gauteng Meet - Braai at Rietvlei

Mr Secretary,

I visited Rietvlei on Friday and is all for the little lapa for our official get together. The picnic area at the birdhide is also nice, however if we miss out on the area next to the hide we will be sitting with an area where their is no grass anymore  . The area at the Coffee Shop is also a bit dusty and I don't think the big lapa is feasable for our "small" group. Will somebody book the lapa??

Thanks Waterbuck "Fire ant" for looking after the flames that we will need for the braai  .

Whilst I am also a near newbie, me and Auntie Hilda will sponsor the food ("pap" and sauce; potato salad; carrot salad; buns and butter) for the main braai.

Dan, I will bring along three (3) 750ml bottles of Amarula + the 750ml one that Untie Hilda won during the auction for the AASS's club members and our non members will also be able to have a few glasses then .

We as mites will then be responsible for our own dop, meat, plates, cutlery, chairs, braai thongs, salt & pepper and table etc.

Think the only point left is the time we will start officially?

There will be those who are travelling on a broomstick Image You do NOT need to read these directions. Just fly directly to Rietvlei, and do not pass go

• The first off ramp after you turned on the R21 is: Nellmapius Dr (M31) take this off ramp.

• At the Robot turn left. At the next robot (garage on your left hand side) turn right towards Olifantsfontein and the St Georges Hotel. Drive for 1,5 km, crossing the Sesmylspruit.
