I saw a report on the sanparks web news archive about the entry gate upgrade . The entry gate is to be moved westwards to take the traffic away from the camp .
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

Hi All
As I understand it from my last visit last week there will be a tempory bridge alongside the old one I assume of the usual pipe and gravel standard. Maybe the mods can help us here, at this late stage the plans must have been done how about someone getting hold of these and posting a diagram and some details.

When we left there on the 6th June, there was still no sign of anything happening with regards the upgrade.

New bridge was washed away! The low bridge is open at the moment, and should stay open unless more rain falls in the catchment area.

Have you read the entrance permit? Do you KNOW the Conditions of Entry?

croc bridge bridge

Recently visited Croc Bridge and saw much building going on. It seems the entrance gate and reception are being moved as well as the petrol station. Can anyone confirm this? It will probably make this delightful camp even more peaceful. No doubt the best game viewing area in the park!!

The petrol station will probably stay where it is as it has just been refurbished! I see gate booths are now going up..... Hopefully not too long before it is operational.

I gather that the aim is to speed things up for check-in, and provide better facitlities for day visitors with more parking, while allowing the traffic to by-pass the camp itself and keep that area quieter. I just went to welcome a new camper (in a camper-van) and found they were just passing through and decided to stop in, hook up to electricity, have a meal and a shower, and then go their way! Meanwhile they blocked a good site which a legitimate camper may have wanted, and used facilities which are there for paying and booked guests not day visitors...... The new entrance facilities should help stop that sort of thing.

No pool planned to the best of my knowledge - but there is always the river of course.....!

Progress needn't be had. Take a look at Orpen, for example.

The lodges have been very nicely rennovated and the pool there must have to rank as one of the best in the park, as it overlooks the waterhole.

The gate is being moved away from the camp so I think the aim of keeping through traffic and day visitors separate from the camp will come to fruition as planned there.

The thing that's always turned me off Croc Bridge (even though it is in great game viewing country) is the through traffic, so I'm looking forward to seeing how the rennovations work out.

Believe the people staying at croc bridge will have more peace.
Just image the gate during holidays and other peak periods.
A constant stream of cars and now they wont enter camp.

Seen the new building site and its about 100 meters away from the camp.

I know Martie mentioned in her blog of this morning that they were currently dismantling the old bridge so all entry is via the new temporary bridge recently built, as long as there are not heavy rains to wash it away again it should all be fine. :D

I think this is the old one in early january 2009 and the new one was nicely covered with water too, we only just managed to get across.

your point 1 is correct. You can only use it when the water level in the bridge is low. Until they started messing with the bridge, the water level was low for most of the year
Your point 2 is partially correct. A low level bridge is cheaper to build, but it was also built many years ago when not too much traffic would have been using the gate so it was adequate for the period in which it was built. There are still a few other low level bridges within it the park. The best known are probably the 2 on the H1-2 across the Sabie and Sand rivers. Also these bridges are less likely to be washed away in flood situations. The water simple rushes over them. Then when the water subsides again they just remove the debris and the bridge is safe again. High level bridges can suffer damage to their foundations during a flood.
Point 3.... yes, when the Crocodile river floods you cannot use the gate at Crocodile Bridge. You have to enter at Malelane or elsewhere
The plan is to build a new bridge so the gate does not have to be closed at flood times, Usually the summer months...December Jan and Feb

The bridge that has been repeatedly washed away is but a temporary bridge.
It is supposed to take the traffic while they are busy constructing a proper concrete high water bridge.
I just think the contractors do not seem to realise the strength or character of that river.

On the bright side, the new bridge's concrete "parts" were there on the roadside in front of the gate on Tuesday.
