Travelling from Hoedspruit Airport to Orpen Gate ...

Unread post by Bothie » Sat Mar 28, 2009 8:41 pm

Hi all,

I'm considering flying into Hoedpsruit Airport and then driving to Orpen Gate for our next Kruger trip (1st night in the park is at Olifants). How safe is this road to travel on and are there sign posts along the way for directions?

I agree. It is quite safe and the road is in good condition. Animals are the biggest worry, especially near Orpen. There are not that much human activity. It is game country with lots of wild animals. So do check the speed, and keep your eyes open. In places there are fences that are down, so antelope and even elephant is a possibility. But even the best game fences do not easily stop antelope such as kudu, and warthog.

I would not like driving that area at night, because of the animals, it is very risky. But I imagine you will be doing it by day.

Hoedspruit Airport

Unread post by wanderw » Fri Jun 26, 2009 5:12 pm

Hi all!
We have just learned that we will probably have to fly one of our family members back to Joburg in the middle of our upcoming Kruger trip. I hope some forumites can help with the following questions:
1) Is Hoedspruit Airport a viable/efficiently run airport - eg do planes leave on time?(We have time constraints.)
2)Are the roads from Orpen gate( R531 to Klaserie, then R40 to Hoedspruit) in good condition?
3) How long will it take us to get to Hoedspruit Airport from Orpen Gate?

OR is it advisable rather to consider Nelspruit or Phalaborwa airports? We will be staying at Satara Restcamp.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Thanx!

We have flown in and out of Hoedspruit fairly often and the flights are painless.
In May we flew in on a de Havilland and out on a jet which cut our flying time by half.
The little airport is very efficient although I must say the flights do not come cheap.
The trip from Orpen is an easy one - about 70 kms to Hoedspruit if my memory serves me correctly and another 20 or so kms to the airport so easily doable in an hour or so!

There are very few schedule flights out of Hoedspruit, and keep in mind that there are two airports at Hoedspruit.
The civil airport will not be any help to you, the other one, East Gate, has very few flights.
Your best bet would be KMIA close to Nelspruit, they have regular flights to JHB and DBN.
You could also try Phalaborwa, but these flights are pricey, in the region of R1500 one way to JHB but there are three a day.

We flew in and out of Eastgate with no problems. It is a very nice little airport, and an easy trip from Orpen with good roads the whole way.

There is a flight from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit and out again every single day and on some days there are two! From a time point of view Hoedspruit is far more doable than KMIA!

The differance in price between landing in Hoedspruit or Phalaborwa is next too nothing. Airlink flies on both airports.

Direct flight from Cape Town to Hoedspruit

Unread post by RobertT » Mon Jul 25, 2011 5:05 pm

See in paper today that a direct flight service will begin tomorrow from Cape town to Hoedspruit, twice a week on a 50 seater.

CPT-HDS, JNB-HDS and JNB-PHW are monopoly routes, with a very high percentage of overseas tourists heading to and from private game lodges. The airlines concerned, SAX and Airlink, have no problem with ripping these passengers off.

If you book these flights in SA, you may sometimes find availability in the discounted fare buckets, but if you book overseas you almost without fail have to settle for a full-fare ticket. The other day I was charged €359 for a return to Phalaborwa, that's just shy of R4,000.00.

It also could be partially due factors of aircraft size , utilisation , average occupancy .
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

It is, but I prefer Hoedspuit Eastgate, because the descent usually takes you right over Mariepskop and the escarpment, affording spectacular views. Depending on the runway, you then fly either over Kapama or the AFB reserve. Phalaborwa is pretty cool too, you can get great views of the big hole. Best of all is the Pafuri dirt strip. SANParks being SANparks, they have devised a nice and complicated descent procedure which takes you straight past Mabyeni mountain and then over the Limpopo floodplain with all its pans, before decending over the ridge to the strip.
