Re: Malaria transmission in KNP

Only your personal physician or a tropical diseases specialist can give you specific recommendations. Howeverr, an old fashioned malarial prophylactic is doxycycline, an antibiotic. It's what I have used on my KNP visits, as it is (in the US) substantially less costly than other antimalarials. The downside is that you must take the tablets every day, starting a few days before you enter the malarial zone and for a full month after you leave the area. And it makes you somewhat more susceptible to sunburn. But given you situation,m it might be a viable option? :hmz:

Our doctor recommends doxycycline so that is what we use.

Afriphile, well done on all the reading  . You are possibly quite an expert right now.

I am sorry to hear that anti-malerials are contra-indicated, due to other medication. It is a big decision to make.

Some months are much riskier. When are you planning to come?

Hi,MM..

We are due to be in KNP 25/11 to 11/12 .
My consultant thinks. (Not proven) that it was the anti malarial tablets that I took last time that has caused my problem.
Because of this ,both he and I ,are reluctant to take the same,or similar again.
Some people mention Doxycycline, which I could use in the future, but at the moment it has a potential reaction with the medication that I am on,at the moment.

I am exploring c ancelling KNP and going to a malaria free park, near the Botswana border.
Cheers,Afriphile.

Thanks to all those who replied to my previous posts.

After some serious investigating and contact with drug manuafacturers,I have received the ok to take Doxycycline as an anti malarial, for our forthcoming trip to KNP.

Now ,all I need to do,is to work out how I can take some of the incessant rain, from the UK to SA. :hmz:

I am really happy for you. :D

I am going to tuck that advice in my memory bank....if in doubt, contact the manufacturers.

Have you contacted a mod about this?

Hello! I will be visiting Kruger National Park beginning of May, 4 days, I am writing to get updated information about the need for antimalarial prophylaxis, is it necessary in this period or can repellent sprays and adequate clothing be enough? Thank you!
