Detailed Description
There was a time in Africa when great tuskers roamed at will, from the deserts of Namibia to Mozambique, from Ethiopia to South Africa. Today, due to the growth of human settlement and the hunt for ivory, the large elephant herds have been drastically reduced so that fewer than 450 000 elephants survive. Sighting a tusker today is a magnificent event, not least because so few remain in the wild. Great tuskers includes information on ivory anatomy, ivory diseases, trade in ivory and conservation of the African elephant. But its main purpose is to share with the reader the beauty, grace and presence of the great bulls that once walked the earth, as well as the current big bulls that roam free in the few protected areas of Africa.

Now I have to tell you about this book .. Saw the book at the Letaba Elephant Museum and thought I'd go check it out at the shop.
This book is worth every single cent and more .. The book goes for R350 in the Kruger Shops and I've seen them at 2 bookstores in JHB .. the most expensive i've seen the book is R353,00.
The book is fantastic reading for any tusker fan .. Covering topics such as the Ivory Trade, Culling, Poaching. But the main objective of the book is showing all the Past, present and future big tuskers of the Kruger National Park and other Parks of africa. It gives information about the tusker with photo's, area he roamed, tusk information etc. It also has some small snippets in of interesting things such as Letaba Camp, the relationship between Phelwana and Ampie Espag (Taken from Jan Rodrigues' book "Veldwagters Vertel" ..
There are plenty of contributions by well known people such as most of the Game Rangers of the KNP, Dr. Ian Whyte, Darryl Balfour, Paul Bosman etc. You will see many familiar names.
The lay-out is beatifull with pictures of all the ellies ... It's not just a great read but makes for a beautiful Coffee Table Book ..
This book is a "MUST HAVE" .. And you won't regret it for 1 minute ..

I have just purchased "Great Tuskers of Africa" by Johan Marais and David Hadaway and all I can say is WOW. It is absolutely stunning.
The books talks about ivory trade, poaching etc and then has info and pictures of the past, present and future tuskers not only in KNP but also touches on some around Africa. Thoughout the book are the most beautiful drawings which make it a delight to page through. It is going to look great on my coffee table.

Received my copy last Friday and have been exploring it slowly — wonderful photos and drawings and interesting, informative text, so much more than "just" an attractive coffee table book!
For those who are interested, it is now available in the USA, at least through amazon.com. I had ordered mine pre-publication from amazon, but it's now out! Definitely recommended!!
