I agree.

Each camp has it's own special atmosphere, but Leokwa is the most central and close to all the main sight seeing spots.

The accommodation is extremely comfortable and the camp itself is a delight for unique views.

Mapungubwe is not one centralized Park, so there are separate entrances for different zones. The Park remains dived by private farms.

Limpopo camp is great for bird lovers, as it is close to the waterhole, but it is in a separate area and quite a drive to the main Park attractions.

Leokwe is close to the confluence and picnic site. It is very close to the canopy tree walk overlooking the Limpopo River. The camp itself is cradled by some of the typical rock formations, which make this place so unique. It is also in the section of the Park that is home to some of the most spectacular Baobabs.

Mapungubwe Hill is close to Leokwe. It is essential to go with a Sanparks guide, but it a very special experience .

While I write this, all that I can think of is packing my vehicle and taking a trip to one of the most unique and mystical places in Africa.

One of my two favourites (the other is MZNP), how 'short' a visit had you planned? My last visit was five nights, all in Leokwe. I did a day trip to the western part of the park and spent several hours in the excellent hide there, which I had all to myself. Despuite it being midday, there was a good anount of elephant traffic, some so close to the hide that I could have almost touched them. Lots of interesting birds and other mammals as well.

I love the treetop walkway, so most days I visited there both morning and afternoon. I find it overall more rewarding than the confluence platforms. Apart from the abundant birdlife, I've had many other sightings 'below' the walkway or on the opposite (Bots) side of the river: elephants, giraffe, various antelopes and more.

However long a visit you ultimately decide on, I'm sure that you won't be disappointed -- and that you'll return!

Matty, that pool is magic. I always tried to be there for the sunrise.

I would often see Eland in the distance. They would wander very close to the camp.

One feature in Mapengubwe that is unbelievable to see is the baboons sleeping hanging from rocks. Because Leopards are such excellent hunters, the baboons have adapted a means to sleep hooked into the rocks of the red stone cliffs. It is really quite remarkable.

Mapungubwe activities - Start?

Unread post by SwingiMA »

Hi everyone.

Do all activities (Game Drives, Walks etc) in Mapungubwe start from Leokwe or is it possible to book activities starting from Vhembe or Limpopo TC as well?

Tried to send an email to the Park but no response so far.

Thanks, Michael

Hello Michael,

All of the activities start from the reception at the entrance to the park, so you have to get yourself from wherever it is you are staying to be at the reception in time for the start.

You are permitted to leave your camp earlier than the official opening and return late providing you have been on an official activity.

It's a bit of a trek coming from LFTC to the office as it's quite a distance, so you would have to leave extra early, but all of the activities are worthwhile, in my opinion.

It's a good idea to plan activities you would like to do and book as soon as you arrive and check in. Also perhaps book activities while staying in the eastern section of the park.
