Mpondo Dam(S102-H5)

Hi Guys,

Just curious 2 know if any1 has had a really interesting experience at this dam.Drove to it for the 1st time on 04/08/07 & got the "feeling" that this dam could yield some good sightings though I had only seen some general game.

Also its nice & quiet.Away from the beaten track as they say...

Like to hear from someone. :|

Donny, I've seen Lion at the dam. The big sighting seen, however was a Black *** and calf about 5 km from the dam.
The bird doesn't sing because it has answers, it sings because it has a song.

I have not seen anything spectacular at the dam itself, but once followed a cheetah on the H5 up to the S102 turn-off for several km's. At the turn-off he/she decided to take a rest in the middle of the road and lied there for several minutes before disappearing into the tall grass.

Thanks to Mm & Stoffel,

Always good 2 know that any given place can provide a good sighting opportunity.Black *** must have been special & how I would luv to have an experience with a cheetah like that.

Been to the park umteen times but yet 2 c cheetah.A group of us went & for whatever reason I took a different route & guess what? They saw 2 cheetah & i've been hearing about it from them ever since !!!

Can't wait 2 get back to the park to even the scores.. .

Did get 2 c black *** on the S1 (Doispane Rd) near Nyamundwa, right next 2 road feeding & very comfortable with my relative close presence. Not other vehicles in sight...

I saw a big buffalo herd (400-500 buffalos) at Mpondo Dam in May 2005. Just before that I also saw a cheetah on the H5 close to the S102 turn off.

Sightings around Mpondo Dam?

Unread post by leander09 »

Good day

We are going to Biyamiti for Honeymoon in a few months time. I was just wondering how good the sightings are around Mpondo dam and the surrounding areas.

We have driven the S114 thousands of times and its a great road but how are the road around Mpondo dam. S26, H5, S102 and the Biyamiti Pvt Road.

Please share what you have seen on these roads.

Thank you
KNP the Home away from home. . .

We drove there in June, sat at the dam for a bit and while its always a lovely view and had plenty of water, there wasn't much to see either there or on the roads around there.
BUT of course that means nothing and its all about the right time and place. 8)
Good luck and enjoy whatever you see.

Never had much luck over the years but last 2 years my luck has changed.
Had a fantastic sighting of a male lion just behind Mpondo Dam . No other cars around. He walked quite a while until he reached dam embankment after which he disappeared into bush.Looked to have been searching for rest of pride. Great sighting.

Got a female lion on bridge of S102.

Wild dog pack with pups on H5 & S102 junction.

Good roads with not too much traffic
Need to get there soon !!!

Sat there and had a sandwich and coffee. Very peaceful and lovely place but hardly any sign of animals for such a large volume of water.

This was my most unusual sighting at Mpondo. I always enjoy stopping there - it's always quiet and often there's a good sighting waiting.......
