Nyathi rest camp, Addo - Mountain Zebra NP part 2

We ate inside, it was bit chilly. Outside were Pied Starlings ready to catch

At 1530 we were well eaten and ready for a game drive. From the gate we turned left and then uphills to Kranskop loop northern part. It started to rain, 17c

Some rather wet locals

It's so nice to see all different species together :D

How cute they are

Then a crow dropped a frog to the road  Was there some kind of fight with them? After we passed, the other picked frog again

By the windmill the rain stopped

Luckily one can braai in those units even with hard wind. Because we ate so well earlier, the dinner was only melted Camembert with olivea and sundried tomato pesto & pita breads. We ate inside

Then it was time to enjoy some nutty wonders, but :wall: :wall: :wall: I have left chirinda's box with couple of nutty wonders to Nyathi :slap: Luckily all yummy rusks were already eaten. I sent apology message to chirinda

It was a very nice day. Falling to sleep was easy before 9 p.m.

:D
Lots of grass and water at Mountain Zebra no wonder all the animals look happy ( apart from the frog :( )

Those units are some of the best in the SANParks accommodation in my opinion :D

Cheers FM

You had some really good sightings at Addo. Nyathi looked to be very special. Good to hear they are doing some planned maintenance. Mountain Zebra also didn't disappoint on the first day, again nice sightings of the locals.Baby springbokkies are just precious. You certainly have upped your bird knowledge through these Travel Tales. I love all the foodie pictures. Gives other visitors to Sanparks some varied meal ideas.

Wonderful sightings on your last morning in Addo.
Obviously eland are nervous animals in general, not just in Kruger

The chalet in MZNP looks absolutely amazing. Some view from the bedroom
Lovely first drive in the park. Love the photo with all the different animals in it.

Ah, FinMari, your updates are a treat!  Loved the peaceful scenes with the wildebeest and those sweet springbokkies.   The soggy frog drama made me chuckle – nature never holds back, does it?

The evening colors were just stunning!  And your "nutty wonders" moment? :slap:  At least you had that creamy camembert to save the day.

Thank you for sharing the calm of the braai and the warm glow of the lantern light, even in the wind. :gflower: Looking forward to the next bit of this wonderful journey!

Wednesday April 2nd, 2025
Mountain Zebra NP

Wake up was at 0620. Temp at stoep 14,9c. We had AC on all night on light warming mode. At 0658 we were at the gate, 13c. This morning we turned to the right from the gate. Steenbok was trying to hide
DSCN2687.JPG
Some springboks on the way to northern part of Ubejane loop

A kudu
DSCN2695.JPG
It was a grey morning. Secretary bird brighted it :D
DSCN2699.JPG
DSCN2700.JPG
Black wildebeest
DSCN2705.JPG
We enjoyed some super nice naartjies while driving :D
DSCN2778.JPG
BBJ was searching something. This is the first video taken with our new proper camera. I have to try more on our next trip. Camera has so much better zoom than my phone
DSCN2710.JPG
We drove via Kranskoop loop's northern road back to the rest camp
DSCN2717.JPG
Even on a grey day views are so amazing
DSCN2721.JPG
We made an extra loop to visit picnicarea with a pool quite close to the rest camp. The pool would invite us in a warmer day
DSCN2724.JPG
Dassie was waiting us when we returned to our unit at 0951
DSCN2725.JPG
Breakfast was grapes with yogurt. The showers :D Both water pressure and temp were so nice :D
Just after 11 o'clock it was time to leave for another drive. We thought to have a quick stop at reception - papers for the night drive. But super lovely Jeanie Botha was on duty and had time to chat with us. So quick stop was actually half an hour with info about location of cheetah mom with tiny cubs. There was then no other option than turn left from the gate and make Kranskop loop clockwise
We didn't found those cheetahs from mountains, but found Cape longclaw
DSCN2730.JPG
It was so green
20250402_123318.jpg
A good idea
20250402_125444.jpg
Luckily on a quiet day some zebras were posing
20250402_131338.jpg
DSCN2749.JPG
A blesbok
DSCN2751.JPG
Karoo Iris
DSCN2756.JPG
Then we met after Grahams Corner a lady who was two nights at the park. She lives two hours away. She will join us to the night drive and her dream was to see a cheetah. While we were there, only one ranger was on duty - no cheetahs tracking was possible

During this trip we have seen several Pin-tailed Whydahs. Also at farm lands next to highways. Now one was posing on the ground close to Ubejane
DSCN2769.JPG
There was also spoonbills, Black-headed herons and Southern Anteater chat (??)
DSCN2772.JPG
It was time to have a lunch with a view
DSCN2773.JPG
This time we saw some springboks from our stoep. Lunch was a gift from super lovely chirinda - chicken boere (Hoender boerewors) with baby marrows
DSCN2776.JPG
Then more clothes for the night drive. It was still 18c, but it would be so much chillier during the drive in OSV. At reception area we chatted with same lady as earlier. We were so happy to see it was Andrew who was the ranger of the night :D We met him couple of times in January 2024. We left for the drive at 1803
20250402_181518.jpg
The drive should been two hours, but we were 3h 22min out. The cost of the drive was R327.24/adult
DSCN2784.JPG
Rest of the day in next post

Mountain Zebra NP part 2

We saw cheetah    That lady was so happy as we did :D Our photos  But usually animal photos during night drives are hard to get. So I took pic of the road
20250402_184650.jpg
My strongest wish for that night drive was to see an Aardwolf
DSCN2793.JPG
We didn't see one Aardwolf, but Andrew found us six
Do you know an aardwolf eats 250 000 termites / night ?
DSCN2809.JPG
DSCN2812.JPG
It was clear sky
DSCN2796.JPG
We had a puncture. The reason drive was longer, we had to wait repacement tyre from the rest camp. While standing there we watched Starlink passing over
DSCN2800.JPG
Luckily Buffalos were not on site but later
DSCN2804.JPG
A genet in the tree
DSCN2807.JPG
We saw also zebras, BEFs, Spring hares during the night drive. I can really recommend to all! It was such a jackpot. We had such a luck during this trip. Our first Aarwark and Aardwolf     Ellies, cheetah, lions, giraffes, all different antelopes including roans, black and white *** (some pics in the last episode not mentioning the parks) and super great variety of birds. I think it was a good idea to visit four parks to see excellent variety of animals :D

We ate still some pate wirh Durbanville Hills Collectors Reserve The Promenade Pinotage at out unit
IMG-20250402-WA0008.jpeg
It was beautiful star night. We slept again curtains open
