All these babies. :D

It doesn't get better than this. Prey and predator, all so endearing. What a day.

What a fabulous sighting, the cubs are so cute.  Sometimes when I see the heavy traffic ahead I need to decide do we sit and wait or turn around and avoid the jam..... but luck was on your side  and being the last to the sighting worked in your favor. Thanks for sharing the :cam:

Carla + Tony wrote: Sun May 25, 2025 9:04 am Cute baby waterbuck (although the impala might think differently  ). I like the photo of mum and baby in the water. We have never seen them in water, only ever on dry land.

Lioness with cubs......in the middle of the road, WOW  I agree with Karin, a dream sighting.
Fantastic photos and well done Timon    . In the photos it does look like there are no cars around, even though it was mayhem.
We often see waterbucks in water especially when it is hot but they can also be seen in the hotest part of the day lying in the sun  Yes, it was a mayhem and we were so happy with all the shots Timon took

You really were lucky     Lion cubs
And they moved (slowly) from grass to be visible and then middle of the road

Thank you for sharing Pumbaa & Timon :gflower:
They walked quite a while on the road and were not at all disturbed by all the cars around them at least it looked so

We still slowly were following the crowd and were lucky in getting shots like that

Image

as on top the lioness stopped from time to time to look a bit around or to let the cubs make up ground so that they were able to keep up with her.

Image

Image

The two rascals were simply too cute for words

Image

and were well-behaved little cubs

Image

luckily the masses of cars or better to say the drivers were also well-behaved and due to the time of the day most of the cars were now following the lions whilst no cars were coming from the direction from Orpen.

Image

From time to time the two cubs were playful as well

Image

especially playing tag with the sibling was great fun.

Image

After nearly 20 minutes whilst following the lions the mother turned into the field but still walked along the roadside extreme good visible for everybody around

Image

whilst the two cubs imitated her.

Image

They now once again walked right besides our car and our cameras again had to do overtime

They continued walking into the direction of Orpen and now again walked again onto the road but as we got our shots and had a fantastic time with them we finally turned around and let the crowd still follow them.

Image

We drove slowly back the H7 and were happy when a group of male kudus crossed our path

Image

and on top were even willing to pose a bit

Image

and so did this male waterbuck

Image

before we finally returned to camp around 15.00 o’clock in the afternoon after such an eventful day so we decided that we will stay for the rest of the day in camp and having an early braai as well.

Monday, 19 February 2024 - Satara

Explored roads: H1-4 – H1-3 – H6 – S37 – S41 – S90 – H1-4 – H7 – H1-4

As we had such good sightings along the H6 yesterday and as the grass was there not that high compared to other areas around Satara we decided to start the day again whilst driving that road and although the lions we met there yesterday were not around today we stopped for a couple of amur falcons

Image

as well as for a yellow billed kite.

Image

We then came across a hyena den where the biggest hyenas was lying right in the middle of the road

Image

whilst one of the younger ones was eying us suspiciously.

Image

All of them were indeed extreme relaxed and we could easily take a couple of close ups

Image

Image

from the members of the clan who showed up and were willing to pose

Image

some were lying very well hidden in the grass and did not move the whole time we spent with them but the youngsters could not resist and came close.

Image

to be continued.....................................
