Identification Help - LBJs

Unread post by hilda » Thu Dec 30, 2004 9:09 pm

Dear Birders,
Please take note that this topic is regularly “cleaned” by moving the posts of a specific bird that has been positively ID-ed to the specific bird topic for all to use when trying to ID their bird sightings, and also to read all the interesting discussions about the birds while ID-ing them.
Should it be impossible for anybody to give a positive ID for a bird for some reason or another, it will be taken out, because it serves no purpose.
Go to Index to Birds Index to Birds and find the topic of the bird you are looking for.

Identification Help - LBJs

Unread post by francoisd » Wed Jan 19, 2005 2:24 pm

Those small brown birds so many of us battle to identify, affectionately named Little Brown Jobs or LBJs for short by birders, can really be a pain especially if you want to increase the bird sightings list of your last trip.

Use this area to post photos of those LBJs you find difficult to identify and maybe some of the forum members might be able to be of assistance.

Remember only LBJs here. If you need a raptor identified go here and for all other birds you can go here.

Need some help with this one: Warbler (I think), seen at Camdeboo NP on 23/01/2017.
This warbler was zipping along the trunk and branches of Acacia (Vachelia) trees in the Lakeview campsite.
The quality of the photograph is a result of the fact that the damn bird would not sit still for a second.
This behaviour, as well as the supercilium extending to well behind the eye suggests WIllow Warbler; but what I know about warblers is dangerous; so all help is welcome!

Spot on Albert, Willow Warbler it is.

The yellowish front edge of the wing is quite a good quick feature to id it on.

Hi, some help needed please. I thought that this was a cisticola, but my book says that they all have horn coloured bills, so now I am stuck! Seen near Mabula, January

Not sure about the bill colour as an id feature but I'd go with a Ratlting Cisticola.

There was discussion today whether this is an Olive-tree Warbler or a Common White Troat.
I've looked at both, but I think it is the Whitethroat?

One of my bogeys... pinkish legs and the light brown belly points away from olive-tree warbler (grey legs/feet and white belly). I'm going to give Zaagkuildrift a shot this week as my wheels are functional again! I've been sidelined: Landy with water-on-the-brain...

Agree... juvenile rattlers have that yellow bill.

Thanks!
We also saw a white-faced owl there - about 10km from the eastern entrance in the trees on the left. Good luck in finding it though! I still don't know how the guy saw it!
