31 JULY - WORLD RANGER DAY

Meet MZNP Park's Senior Section Ranger, Wonga Pama.

Wonga says, "What drives me to wake up every morning is the dedication and commitment I made towards contributing to the protection of our natural heritage and against environmental crimes. I thoroughly enjoy the excitement of working out in nature where each day is never the same as another."

Today we salute all our Rangers for the stellar work they do 365 days a year!

31 JULY - WORLD RANGER DAY

Meet Karoo National Park Assistant Section Ranger, Jessyca Domingo, who says:
"What inspires me to wake up every day to protect our biodiversity and natural heritage is knowing the difference we are making for future generations. I cannot think of a world without areas which have not been negatively impacted by humans and where animals don't roam free and vegetation grows wild. Hopefully the difference I am making now will be seen in years to come."

Jessyca is pictured here in a helicopter conducting aerial census over the Park.

We salute all our Rangers, not just today, but every day, for the invaluable work they do.

The theme for World Ranger Day 2023 is “30 by 30”, building on the momentum from the 2022 United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15).

Today Kruger National Park will be commemorating this auspicious event as well as paying tribute to our fallen heroes. We also take this moment to remind the remaining teams, world wide that have been on the forefront for conservation efforts, that they are not alone.

Today the SANParks Cape Region celebrates #WorldRangerDay!

World Ranger Day (WRD) is celebrated annually on the 31st of July to commemorate rangers killed or injured in the line of duty and celebrates the work rangers do to protect the world’s natural and cultural treasures. South African National Parks (SANParks) today celebrated and honoured its rangers at World Ranger Day celebrations across all its 21 national parks.

Speaking at the anchor event for the World Ranger Day celebration held at the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park, Eastern Cape, SANParks Board Chairperson, Pam Yako said, this is a day dedicated to our men and women who daily devote their lives and time to protect the inheritance and heritage for present and future generations. “These are beacons of environmental stewardship, inspiring the world with innovative conservation practices and they should be celebrated.”

According to Yako a total number of 148 Rangers lost their lives the world over in the period, June 2022 to May 2023 from various causes ranging from animal attacks, death in service, homicide, occupational and vehicle accidents… “in Africa alone, we have lost 65 Rangers and today we want to pay a special tribute to those men and women of honour.”

South Africa is battling the threat against its fauna and flora on so many fronts from poaching, illegal harvesting of plants, fish and dumping of waste in the oceans. “As a result, much of the Ranger Corps duties are being focused on anti-poaching activities leaving many other operational requirements such as area integrity management seldom attended.” Read the full statement here: https://tinyurl.com/42k4tzkn
