Eulogy to Johann Oelofse

Wow, what a sad day to learn of the passing of "Mabarule" - Johann Oelofse.

I had the immense privilege of working as a Field Guide, at the Mopani Restcamp for a bit more than a year, with Johann Oelofse keeping an eye on the Mooiplaas Section, form the house on the hill just outside of the camp.
Johann was a giant among men, not only due to his length and size 14 shoes, but his personality and reputation as a no-nonsense person and great conservationist as well. Meeting him for the first time on that "Koppie" was nerve wrecking, but my nerves were soon put at ease by his calm demeanor.
I was soon looking forward to our weekly meetings, and his insights and stories as I shared our latest sightings with him.
I was further privileged to host Johann one my vehicle as a guest/expert during a KNP Honorary Ranger's Birding weekend. Again, his experience, knowledge and stories enthralled us all.

I did not know Johann for a very long time, but he made a lasting impression on me as a young man, and still look back at the lessons learnt from him as mentor.

I thought I would start this thread as a eulogy to the great man. Please share your thoughts, experiences and stories with the world, as we remember one of the giants, on whose shoulders we are able to stand.
