Phalaborwa airport

Unread post by MeezersUK »

Is the airport open? I'm planning an itinerary for northern Kruger next November. Wanted to check flight times, but can find no flights from Johannesburg to Phalaborwa.

Most airlines only release their flight schedules and open booking 10 to 11 months in advance.
So perhaps you are a bit early.
Keep monitoring the airline website over the next few weeks.

It's a bit more of a hike, but flights are going to/from Hoedspruit.

I recently booked flying into Skukuza late August and out of Hoedspruit mid September.

Best of luck in your planning and your trip!

Hoedspruit airport is a nice little airport, and less than an hour's drive from Phalaborwa.
They have a car rental department there as well.

I'm now thinking either in and out of Hoedspruit or in Hoedspruit out Skukuza. @Stark , who did you book with ? I can't find times or prices for anything beyond this month.

@Stark, I have almost the same dates as you! Just FYI Qatar Airlines now is linked with SA Airlink, so you can book directly thru them into any of airlinks SA destinations.
MeezersUK - you need to change the year in the drop down selection box, it will then show you all next years flights.
I was very partial to Phalaborwa as it was an easy in/out. I'm do enjoy Skukuza which is wonderful as you can spot animals right out the plane window. And I do enjoy the AM Spa at Skukuza after the long haul flight. I dropped a friend off at Hoedspruit last year, and it was a bit more of a drive, but was very easy, just two right turns out of Orpen, and you are in the bush most of the time and don't have to drive thru and villages, so traffic is not a problem. Hoedspruit is a bit more industrial looking, but has really good connections, just not as cute as the other 3 Kruger area airports - and we know how important cute is!

I did what Throwdown did and booked directly with Airlink.

And Throwdown your itinerary looks awesome! I'll fly a yellow ribbon and maybe we'll see each other in the park.

Phalaborwa Airport is still closed. As far as I can find out, this is for an indefinite period.
Polokwane and Hoedspruit are good alternatives as is Skukuza.

All replies posted earlier are true and correct. Just a little add-on: both Bidvest and Avis/Budget currently still have active desks at Phalaborwa! So, and for the record only, I am flying Joburg > Hoedspruit > collected by friends > collecting my rental at Phal > then straight up North a few days later!! 8)
Edit: only 10 sleeps to go!!
