Wild Card extension due to Covid-19

Unread post by Bosveld_Doep »

Today's announcement (16 March) from SanParks about no penalties or extra charges to booking amendments is a good start, but doesn't go far enough, especially for overseas residents like me.

It is highly likely that I will have to re-schedule a nine night May 2020 trip to beyond the expiry date of my current International Couple's Wild Card. Unless SanParks agrees to extend expiry dates of current Wild Cards, I will have to pay a small extra fortune.

There is a precedent for this, with airline and hotel loyalty schemes across the world extending their membership benefits or reward opportunities for several months and usually without conditions.

SanParks needs to wake up and smell the roses and make a similar goodwill gesture - which in turn will also make me much more open to a goodwill gesture of my own towards Daily Conservation Fees, which although they are expensive for foreign residents, do go to benefit the wild life who deserve as much financial support as can be afforded.
2020 Itinerary (now cancelled :( hopefully to be re-scheduled for 2021)
19-20 May - Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp
21-23 May - Lower Sabie Rest Camp
24-25 May - Skukuza Rest Camp
26-27 May - Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp

Have you sent an e-mail to the wild card to ask. Some of your other remarks I think the mods need to answer as I am not in a position to do that

This is the answer that I have just received.

"Kindly let the client know that he needs to send a refund or reschedule date to [email protected], so that they can assist them further with the query."

Hope that helps Bosveld_Doep.

Many thanks to you both, Crested Val & Hugh for your sympathetic response.

I will certainly take up the case with Wild Card Admin, and I hope that someone there will be enabled to make a sensible commercial decision to my petition for an extension to the Wild Card expiry date, or a significant renewal discount.

My only concern is that until some director issues an edict that allows frontline staff to provide meaningful help to enquirers in my position, a sensible outcome is not guaranteed.

Has anyone really understood what the answer provided in the Wild Card FAQ means?

Can I freeze my Wildcard Membership for the duration of the Lockdown?
Yes, we will extend your membership for a year from the date of your next visit which should be no later than March 2021.

My case:
Bookings end of May 2020, will have to cancel/postpone those of course.
Wild Card valid until November 2020.

My specific question:
Assuming they really do mean "freeze Wildcard Membership during lockdown", shouldn't I be able to reserve new dates in for example January 2021, and then at arrival January 2021 have my current Wild Card membership extended until January 2022?

That's how I understand it, given the way the reply is written.

AnBlixt it might be best for you to send your query to the address given once you have your new dates and know exactly when your trip is to be and also more info on how long the lock down will have been.
but possibly when Crested Val is back on line again she might have some further suggestions?

Thank you very much for your reply and the mail address, Elsa!
Yes I will mail them straight away, hopefully they will reply before April 21 because then we have to decide if we cancel or just change our dates.

Edit: I have now mailed and will get back here if and when I get a reply.

EDIT!!!

I now received an update from Wild Card:

My membership is extended one year! Instead of originally expiring October 2020, it is now expiring October 2021!

Is the 12 month extension on your wild card validity dates on a case by case basis or has it been applied to all wild card holders.
Do I need to contact the relevant authorities or will it just show up account details
Stay safe everyone
Hoping to get to Kruger but our trip is most probably cancelled due to 2020 being an open window and 2021 being closed :(

Thanks for the feedback AnBlixt.

or has it been applied to all wild card holders.

LeeuwinArt2016, I would say just to be sure do contact them directly with your details.

My idea was this:
First, transfer all your credits to the simplest possible booking sufficiently far ahead, maybe at least December 2020 or even next year. There's no point anyway in asking for cash refunds now for us international visitors with the Rand being so low.
This is also because, in my experience, the Central Reservations staff prefer to deal with specific requests, not general questions about how this or that would work if I do this and this.
Also, I used the Request Form for this, after several attempts of mailing and calling without getting any reply.

And then I contacted Wild Card through Request Form as well, pointing out my new reservation and asking for how long my current Wild Card membership would be valid. I wouldn't count on them extending all memberships automatically, but maybe they will...

In any case I find this solution better and more fair to all members than just extending one year from next arrival time in any national park until March 2021, which was communicated earlier.
