TMNP Cape of Good Hope Overnight Trail - Clockwise or not?

Unread post by SwingiMA »

Hi everyone,

I will be doing the Cape of Good Hope Trail with a group of 18 in October.

The official route goes clockwise down on the False Bay side on day 1 and back to the gate on the Atlantic side on day 2.

I have heard from people who have done it before, that in the past, the official route went the other way around avoiding the last steep way up on day 2. They therefore suggested, doing the route anticlockwise against the official direction might be more pleasant.

Does anyone know if and why the direction of the trail has been changed?
Does anyone have any experience regarding which direction to follow (anti/clockwise)?

Any other recommendations/suggestions?

Thanks, Michael

I must admit, the last time I walked this trail was about 10 years ago and I had no idea the direction changed. I would hate to do the trail starting on the False Bay side mainly because day 2 is about twice the distance of day 1??? In fact I would go as far as to say I would not do the trail if I was forced to go clockwise.
