Crantmissy and Okie -- I can honestly say that the Ellie dung was NOT a great idea for braai fuel. It may have been a bit green
Although he would not admit to leaving his vehicle to obtain it !! we were sure he got it very near by ?? :(

We admired his determination (even though it didn't work properly), As I said at least he tried !! :D

As for starting a braai in the bush- I /we do prefer his option- :D as opposed to the gas bottle fuelled bunsen burner approach ? :naughty:
So uncool for the bush- IMO.

So now that we have our braai going....any special recipes or other novelty braai ideas you might want to share?

I can only imagine with the Rugby World Cup and SA Heritage Day next week, there will be quite a few braais on the go.........

Mischief- even though it is quite cool here - a mere 12 degrees and dropping- it is a wattle wood based fire for the coals :)
T-Bone steak seasoned individually- corn cob (mealies) in foil -and rabbit tucker as well
Also a beer bread cooked in the flat bottom cast iron pot.

Rugby not seen here till 9.45 pm - can’t wait though :D

Have a happy one everybody.

Yes Mischief- may the best team win indeed - But remember- it is only a game

Beer bread recipe
3 cups of flour (plain flour usually)
3 tsp of baking powder
1 tsp of salt
1 330ml bottle of beer - i prefer draught beer for the malty flavour :)
Do not beat the mix too hard , or it won’t rise properly.

Bake for 20 minutes- then I add to the top cheese and streaky bacon -
Put the lid back on for another 20 minutes.
Cut and butter it up  you can’t go wrong really

:D

Cheers Colbol

Beer bread is a perfect accompaniment to a good braai.
Thanks Colbol.

And by taking part in this online project, give their permission for the VHRs to use their trade secrets to compile an eBook (with credits) for all visitors to SANParks to use to ensure they make the perfect Braai!

So come on all you braai experts, I'm sure there are some wonderful and tasty recipes out there.

And with that in mind we have a wonderful topic on the forum with so many wonderful tired and tested braai recipes that we might like to consider using for this project. Recipes - Sweet, savoury and liquid!!!

If there is any member who has posted one of their favourite braai recipes in that topic and would prefer us not to include it in an e-book then please would you contact me by PM by the end of October and we would honour that decision.

We would obviously not be using every one but any that we feel would be most suitable.

Those that we do use will have the author credited for said recipe . 8)

Elephant dung smoke can be useful to repel mosquitoes and even bees if they are hovering around a camp site. Obviously this is not allowed in Sanparks. All you do is stuff some into a metal or enamel mug and light it, but I could not think of anything worse than having that smokey "flavour" go into my meat. I prefer the traditional spices and marinades instead

On that one we agree Cantona! We have mossies here in White River but no elephants so I make use of the most environmentally friendly repellant or just get bitten :D .

Colbol, on your beer bread, we are not alcohol consumers at all is there a possible substitute that can be used for the beer?

:hmz: Elephant dung smoked meat flavour- I would rather the mozzies I think-
Interesting tip though

Mischief- anything with a yeast base apparently will work - but of course the flavour changes- eg Ginger Beer - White wine juice - Apple cider maybe !!!

Olbol thanks for that. I do know I enjoyed a nice ice cold ginger beer from the shop in Orpen when we went last September 2019..... so that sounds like the very next best option!

While I'm a fair hand with my backyard Weber grill and Traeger smoke, I have yet to master the art of the braai. I've come close, but I have so much to learn!

This is a fantastic thread to resurrect as I have some basic questions that are probably common knowledge... :)

First up - fuel! How much wood do you use? Or, put another way, how high to you stack your wood? Would you have a preference for wood purchased at a grocery store near Kruger, in camp, or other? How many fire lighters do you use?

It depends if you are making a "man fire" or whether you want to braai that night.
