Nikon Lenses

Unread post by katydownunder »

I am just thinking about buying a new lens... Image

And I need some Image
Does anyone has any experiences with the Nikon AF-S DX VR 18–200 mm / 3.5–5.6 G IF ED ?
Maybe some pics as well?
It is very hard to get one at the moment (it is very popular) so the delivery time is 6-8 weeks. But that gives me some extra time to make up my mind.

Hi Katy,

This 18-200 VR lens is great but from reports is designed as a lens to stay on your camera all the time to keep the camera sensor clean.
Advantage: HUGE RANGE from ultra wide angle to telephoto
Disadvantages: A consumer lens
The front element rotates in focusing bad for filter use
The lens extends FAR out when Zooming = Bad for balance
Worst of all they say the images are soft at both ends so whats the point of the lens in the first place?
I'm just trying to help so my advice is
1. get onto this website www.bhphotovideo.com
2. look at the top of the range 70-700 f2.8 VR @US$ 1599
3. Shipping is quite expensive but then get a lot of "necessary items" like Memory cards as well to make it worthwhile.

Good Luck

I have a feeling that she will hold her very own 18-200 mm lens in her hands very soon. Image

 How could you possibly know?!

Katja was so kind to tell me where she ordered the Lens. Image

They delivered it yesterday and today I was able to pick it up.

Now I need a good opportunity to test it.Unfortunately the weather does not look too promissing. :?
But as soon as I got the first results I will post some pics.

I finally managed to go to the Zoo to test my new Lens.

And I really like it. It feels good,it's not too heavy and the autofocus is fast and silent. I just listen to my inner voice, and do not so much rely on all the technical stuff.

Here are some pics I made during the last two days visiting the Zoo here in Cologne and nearby Duisburg.

If you would like to see more, have a look here and here.

I would at anytime buy this lens again.
@ ceruleanwildfire I think the Nikkor 70-300mm VR is very nice as well, but as I already have a lens of that range (ok it's not VR, but..) but if you are looking for a lens of that range I think it's worth considering.
@ Peter Betts Of course I know the 70-700 f2.8 VR lens is a beauty but I also know that it is far over my budget.
And having the choice buying the lens or going to Africa for a holiday.... Guess what's my choice

Geez, this lens is like gold dust.

Is it really worth it?
